TRUSSELL (Sumner L. Trussell) One of the most prominent attorneys of the Minneapolis bar is S. L. Trussell, who was born on a farm near Champlin, Hennepin county, on the 29th of October, 1860. The progenitor of the Trussell family in this country came to America in 1680 and lived on part of the land where Boston now stands. James H. Trussell, the father of S. L, lived in New Hampshire for a number of years and came to Minnesota in 1856. S. L. Trussell received his early educational training in the public schools of Champlin and at the age of seventeen years entered the preparatory department of the State University. In due time he became a student in the University of Minnesota and he was graduated from that institution with the A. B. degree in 1883. In early life he had determined to take up the practice of law and therefore he enrolled in the law department of Columbia University, where he was a student for one year. He was admitted to the bar in 1885 and practiced until 1889, when he entered the service of the internal revenue department of the United States. He was active in that connection until 1894 and for the following four years engaged in practice in Minneapolis. In 1898, however, he again became active in the internal revenue department and served in that capacity until 1916. During the last six and one-half years of his service he was chief deputy collector at St. Paul. His twenty years of service in the internal revenue department has made him an expert on all tax laws and he makes a specialty of federal tax matters. On the 1st of January, 1917, he resumed the practice of his profession independently. In July, 1920, he organized the firm of Trussell, Smiley and Collins, with offices in the Metropolitan Bank building. This firm enjoys an extensive and important clientele and ranks among the foremost firms of its kind in the county and state. On the 20th of May, 1920, occurred the marriage of Mr. Trussell to Mrs. Hazel J. Patterson. Since attaining his majority Mr. Trussell has given his political allegiance to the republican party and the principles for which it stands. Fraternally he is identified with Minneapolis Lodge, No. 44, Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and belongs to the Minnetonka Country Club, the Minneapolis Athletic Club and the Lincoln Club.
