FRED S. VAN BERGEN (Frederick Schoelett Van Bergen)
One of the efficient young business men of Minneapolis is Fred S. Van Bergen,
manager of the Power Equipment Company. He was born at Rice Lake, Wisconsin, on
the 9th of October, 1885, a son of Frederick Morton and Anna (Evans) Van Bergen.
In the acquirement of his early education he attended the public schools of his
birthplace and was graduated with the degree of mechanical engineer from the
University of Michigan in 1910. He then went into the locomotive shops of the
Erie Railroad at Mead-ville, Pennsylvania, where he remained for about one year,
when he became connected with the Power Equipment Company of Minneapolis. That
was in August, 1911, and in 1916 he was promoted to the position of manager of
the company and has since dis­charged the duties of that office to the best of
his ability. He is a competent and able young business man and has won the
confidence and esteem of all with whom he has come into contact. His associates
in this business are W. B. Jordan, Sr., W. B. Jordan, Jr., and W. A. Jordan.
The Power Equipment Company is one of the representative business interests of
the state. It furnishes equipment for plants and has four distinct departments:
First, the emergency department, which furnishes equipment for electric power
plants, white ways, and lighting and pumping equipment; second, the mill supply
department, supply­ing tools, pipes, belting, fittings, shafting and in fact,
everything for transmission, etc.; third, tire department, supplying auto cases,
tires, tubes, etc.; and fourth, electrical and household appliance department,
supplying electric ranges, vacuum cleaners, washing machines, sweepers, ironers,
lamps, etc. In 1922 the company opened a retail store at No. 823 Nicollet
avenue. This is a "good housekeeping" store and sells direct to the consumer.
On the 13th of December, 1913, was celebrated the marriage of Mr. Van Bergen to
Miss Jeannette Hall of St. Paul, and to their union two sons have been born:
Frederick Hall and Richard Mudge. Mrs. Van Bergen is a woman of much culture and
refinement and she is prominent in the club and social circles of the community.
Mr. Van Bergen gives his political allegiance to the democratic party and the
prin­ciples for which it stands. He is a public-spirited citizen and his
influence is ever on the side of advancement and improvement, being connected
with every organization that has for its purpose the development and improvement
of the city, county and state. While in college Mr. Van Bergen became affiliated
with Alpha Delta Phi, a national college fraternity (social) of high standing.
