Van Campen) A representative member of the legal profession in Minneapolis is C. H. Van Campen, vice president and attorney of the Fred L. Gray Company. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1872. The Van Campens originally resided in Holland. The progenitor of the family in America was Gerrit Jansen Van Campen, who came to America in 1658. He was a professional soldier under Peter Stuyvesant, governor of New York. Charles Van Campen, his lineal descendant, was the father of C. H. Van Campen. He lived in New Jersey and married Mary L. Elkins, a member of a Connecticut family. Mr. and Mrs. Van Campen lived in Chicago for many years, but moved to Rochester, Minnesota, in 1875. C. H. Van Campen received his education in the public and high schools at Rochester, Minnesota. His earliest ambition was to become a lawyer and subsequently he enrolled in the legal department of the University of Minnesota and was graduated from that institution in 1894, with the LL. B. degree. He was admitted to the bar the same year and engaged in practice in partnership with Eugene G. Hay, the firm being known as Hay & Van Campen. That association was maintained successfully for six years. In 1900 he became connected with the Fred L. Gray Company and is now vice president of the company and attorney. He has proven himself to be a business man of ability as well as a representative attorney, and he has been a dominant factor in the continued success of the company. In 1919 was celebrated the marriage of Mr. Van Campen and Miss Cora Taney, and to their union two children have been born: Mary Jane and John. Mrs. Van Campen is a woman of charming and magnetic personality and she is socially prominent. The political allegiance of Mr. Van Campen is given to the republican party and although he has never sought nor desired public preferment, he maintains an active interest in party affairs and is well versed on all important issues of the day. He is a member of the Civic & Commerce Association and he is identified with the Minneapolis Club, the Minikahda Club, the University Club and the Automobile Club.
