Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical Vol II, pg 777-778 A. S. VELIE (Austin S. Velie) One of the most prominent and successful business men of Minneapolis is A. S. Velie who, though but thirty-seven years of age, is identified with many extensive and important business interests in this city. He was born in Ontario, Canada, on the 19th of December, 1885. When seven years of age A. S. Velie removed with his parents to Winnipeg and lived there for a short time before coming to the United States. Subsequently they located in Minnesota and here Mr. Velie received his limited education. His initial step into the business world was made as a clerk and he acquired considerable experience in the grocery business, being connected with that business in association with an older brother. He was quick to take advantage of every opportunity offered him and subsequently he became manager for the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company. He was active in the conduct of that store at No. 521 Nicollet avenue for five years. At the termination of that time he returned to Winnipeg, Canada, and was active in the grocery business there for some time. Later he came back to Minneapolis and became a member of Eckland Brothers Company. Since 1912 he has been treasurer of the company and he is discharging the many duties devolving upon him to the complete satisfaction of all concerned. He is also treasurer of the Allied Automotive Industries and was first president of the Twin Cities Vehicle Manufacturing Company. His connection with these leading enterprises indicates his business ability and the confidence and esteem in which he is held by his fellowmen. He is one of the men who has risen from a clerkship and built great enterprises. In 1912 was celebrated the marriage of Mr. Velie and Miss Edna G. Kingan. To their union three children have been born: Vincent S., John J. and Mary. In his political views Mr. Velie is a stanch republican and maintains an active interest in party affairs. He is a director in the Civic & Commerce Association and a member of the Calhoun Commercial Club, being a director on the publicity committee of the latter body. His religious faith is evidenced by his membership in the Episcopalian church. Mr. Velie devotes the greater part of his time and attention to his business and he spends his spare time in playing golf, in which sport he is proficient.
