Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical Vol II, pg 258-261 HARRY B. WAITE Harry B. Waite, whose active association with the lumber industry is that of president of the H. B. Waite Lumber Company and also of the Waite Mill & Timber Company, was born in Chicago, Illinois, July 23, 1865, his parents being Henry J. and Ann (Ellis) Waite, who were natives of England but crossed the Atlantic in 1852, first settling in Canada, whence they later removed to Chicago. The father was a physician. Harry B. Waite spent his early years in his native city and came to Minneapolis when a youth of fifteen. Here he completed his education in the public schools and after his textbooks were put aside he was employed by the Minnesota Transfer Railway Company. His next position was with the firm of Cole & Weeks, in the lumber business, in the capacity of bookkeeper and for four years he remained with that house, or until the firm went out of business and Mr. Waite then secured a position with the lumber firm of N. P. Clarke & Company and filled the position of sales manager for eight years. In 1896 he organized the H. B. Waite Lumber Company to engage in business on his own account and through the intervening years, covering more than a quarter of a century, he has been at the head of this concern as president. The business was soon established upon a paying basis and the trade has steadily increased in volume and importance through the intervening years. Mr. Waite extended the scope of his activities in 1903, when he organized the Waite Mill & Timber Company, of which he has also been the president. The lumber and timber properties of these companies are situated in the state of Washington, where they have large holdings. Their mills are also located on the property in the Northwest. The business in its various phases has been steadily developed from the purchase of standing timber to the marketing of the finished product. Mr. Waite's plans are carefully formulated, he introduces thoroughly established business methods into the conduct of his affairs, and has found that the secret of success lies in the accomplishment of maximum results with a minimum expenditure of time, labor and material. Aside from this he is also a director in the Northwestern National Bank. On the 19th of March, 1891, Mr. Waite was united in marriage to Miss Luella Lichty of Waterloo, Iowa, and, they have become parents of one child, Elizabeth. Mr. Waite is well known in the club circles of the city, having membership in the Minneapolis, Lafayette, Minikahda and Woodhill Country Clubs and also in the Rainier Club of Seattle, Washington. He is a Mason of high rank, having attained the Knights Templar degree in the Commandery, while with the Nobles of Zuhrah Temple of the Mystic Shrine he has crossed the sands of the desert. During the World war he was active in promoting the Liberty Loan drives and in supplying the government with ship timber and the necessary lumber for aeroplane construction.
