Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical Vol II, pg 281-282 ALFRED LANSING WARNER Alfred Lansing Warner has been active in the business circles of Minneapolis for many years. He is now manager of the Pittsburgh Coal Company and has extensive and well appointed offices in the Lumber Exchange building. Mr. Warner was born in Albany, New York, on the 3d of December, 1860, a son of Calvin N. and Charlotte (Tonge) Warner. On the maternal side he is of English descent. Calvin N. Warner was a resident of New York state for many years and was there active in the cement manufacturing business. In 1871 he came to Minneapolis and was active in the conduct of a paper mill for some twenty years. He retired several years previous to his death at the age of eighty-six years. Mrs. C. N. Warner is likewise deceased. In the acquirement of his education Alfred Lansing Warner attended the private schools of Albany for two years and in 1871 came to Minneapolis and attended the public schools for three years. Subsequently he enrolled in the Captain Dewey Military School and was a student there for two years. Upon the completion of his education he accepted a position with the firm of Haglin & Corser, architects, with whom he remained two years, at the termination of which time he went on a surveying expedition with General Thomas Rosser, chief engineer of the Northern Pacific Railroad. He was engaged in surveying for one year and then returned to Minneapolis and accepted a clerkship in the Northwestern National Bank here for two years. He then engaged in the conduct of the paper mill with his father and in 1889 he bought an interest in the firm of Drischel & Bennett, coal dealers. The name of that company was changed to the Bennett & Warner Coal Company and later Mr. Warner purchased the interests of Mr. Bennett. The business was then continued under his own name, until he disposed of it to the Pioneer Fuel Company. He remained in charge of the business, however, and in 1900 the Pioneer Fuel Company was taken over by the Pittsburgh Coal Company and Mr. Warner was retained as manager of the business. He is active in that connection at the present time and no doubt a large part of the success of the company may be attributed to the keen business and executive ability of its one-time owner and present manager. On the 9th of September, 1884, in New York city, was celebrated the marriage of Alfred Lansing Warner and Miss Lizzie E. Newman, a daughter of Dr. William Newman, a prominent physician of New York city. Her father was a native of England and came to this country in 1843. To Mr. and Mrs. Warner the following children have been born: Alfred N., who is thirty-seven years of age, married Miss Mary McAfee and has one son; Earl K., thirty-three years of age, married Miss Lillian Pickering of Minneapolis and they have three children; Gladys, the elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Warner, is thirty years of age and is the wife of C. R. Jenkins of Minneapolis and the mother of three boys; Madeline E., twenty-five years of age, is the wife of Harry E. Nelson of Minneapolis and the mother of one child. Mr. and Mrs. Warner take a just pride in their children. They were given every advantage possible and reared in a home where love and respect were the dominant factors, and they have become prominent citizens in the city of their birth. Mr. and Mrs. Warner are also very proud of their grandchildren. Politically Alfred Lansing Warner is a stanch republican, having firm belief in the principles of that party as factors in good government. His religious faith is manifest in his attendance at St. Mark's Episcopal church, and he is a generous contributor to its support and a zealous worker in its behalf. Fraternally he is identified with the Masons, holding membership in the Commandery and Zuhrah Temple of the Mystic Shrine. He is likewise affiliated with Lodge No. 44, Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. Socially Mr. Warner is connected with the Minneapolis Athletic Club. He is a great lover of nature and his hobby may be said to be flowers. His life has been an active one and in every undertaking he has achieved well-merited success. He has been prominent in the furtherance of many movements for the upbuilding of Minneapolis and his home is one of the show places of the city. Quiet and unassuming, he has forged his way to the top, giving assistance in his progress to those less fortunate.
