Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical Vol II, pg 556-557 HENRY WEISKOPF Henry Weiskopf, one of the substantial business men of Minneapolis, is the pioneer paint manufacturer of this city, in which he has made his home for the past forty-two years, and throughout the period he has maintained an unassailable reputation for integrity and reliability. A native of Bohemia, he was born September 7, 1850, of the marriage of Isaac and Anna (Popper) Weiskopf, who were also natives of that country, in which they spent their lives, the father devoting his attention to mercantile interests. After attending the grammar schools of Bohemia, Henry Weiskopf was for three years a student in the high school at Budweis, Bohemia, from which he was graduated in 1866. Owing to the war between Germany and Austria, he was obliged to terminate his studies, spending a year as an employe in a button factory at Teplitz. In 186S he sailed for the United States, going to the home of his uncle in Charleston, South Carolina. He secured work in a mercantile establishment, with which he was connected for two years, and then went to New York city, where he spent three years. The year 1873 found him in Jacksonville, Florida, and he engaged in the paint business in that city until 1880. In the spring of that year he arrived in Minneapolis and he has since been occupied in the manufacture of paint in this city, his first location being at No. 252 Hennepin avenue. Later he removed to No. 13 South Fourth street, where he remained for about ten years, and in 1909 he leased his present building, a four-story concrete structure at No. 1007 Marquette avenue, which he purchased in 1917. He established the first paint store in Minneapolis and with the passing years his business has steadily developed, owing to his capable management and untiring efforts, until he is now conducting the leading enterprise of the kind in the city, catering to both the wholesale and retail trade. He has been watchful of every indication pointing to success and is numbered among the most progressive business men in the city. On November 1, 1874, Mr. Weiskopf was married to Miss Bertha Weiskopf, a native of Charleston, South Carolina, and of their children five are living: Leila; Robert, who married Esther Fromme; Annalee, the wife of Morris Wolff; Jessie, now Mrs. Leonard Cohen; and Leonard, a veteran of the World war, who saw active overseas service, being connected with the Aviation Corps. He and his brother, Robert, and brother-in-law, Mr. Wolff, are associated with the subject of this review in the paint business. Mr. Weiskopf is a member of the Hebrew Reform Congregation, of which he has been president. He is also a member of the Independent Order of B'nai B'rith and for several years was treasurer of the Associated Jewish Charities. He is now serving as president of the Montefiore Burial Association and is connected with the Oak Ridge Club, while through his membership with the Civic & Commerce Association he does all in his power to promote the welfare and prosperity of his adopted city. America has been to him the land of opportunity and one of the important manufacturing industries of Minneapolis stands as a monument to his industry, ability and business acumen. He is thoroughly American in spirit and interests, and in his life he exemplifies the spirit of progress and enterprise which has been the chief factor in the upbuilding of the Northwest.
