H. Peavey & Company, dealers in grain, and he is also interested in other lines of activity, all of which have a distinct bearing upon the commercial development and prosperity of the city. His birth occurred at Mentone, France, on the 21st of April, 1873, and his parents were the Rev. Thomas Bucklin and Annie Elizabeth (Jonas) Wells, the former of whom served as rector of St. Mark's Episcopal church of Minneapolis from 1880 until 1891. The founder of the family in this country was Thomas Wells, who settled at Ipswich, Massachusetts, in 1635. In the acquirement of an education Frederick B. Wells attended the public schools of Minneapolis, later spending a year as a student at the University of Minnesota, and he then took a scientific course in Yale University. In 1891 he became connected with F. H. Peavey & Company, extensive grain operators of this city, and he is now filling the responsible office of vice president of the firm. He has a detailed knowledge of the business and his carefully formulated plans and unremitting application have materially aided in the development of the undertaking, which ranks with the leading concerns of this character in the country. Mr. Wells also has financial interests, being one of the directors of the First National Bank of this city and also of the Minneapolis Trust Company. On the 19th of September, 1898, Mr. Wells was united in marriage to Miss Mary Drew Peavey, a daughter of Frank H. and Mary (Wright) Peavey, prominent residents of this city, and they have four children: Mary Wright Peavey Wells. Thomas Bucklin Wells (II), Frank Hutchison Peavey Wells and Frederick Brown Wells, Jr. In religious faith Mr. Wells is an Episcopalian and his political support is given to the republican party. He is a valued member and past president of the Chamber of Commerce, whose plans and projects for the expansion of the business interests of the city receive his hearty cooperation and support. He is also deeply interested in everything that tends to promote the cultural development of Minneapolis and is a director of the Orchestral Association. His social nature finds expression in his membership with the Minneapolis Club, the Minikahda Club, the Lafayette Club and the Woodhill Club, all of this city; the University Club of St. Paul; the Manitoba Club of Winnipeg, Canada; the Yale Club of New York city and the Chicago Club. Mr. Wells is a veteran of the World war. He was commissioned a major of the Quartermaster Corps in December, 1917, and on the 24th of May, 1919, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, being honorably discharged in April, 1919, as colonel of the general staff of the United States army. He is in all respects a loyal and public-spirited citizen and brings to his various duties in life a keen mind and a broad intelligence which are the basis of his success.
