Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical Vol II, pg 651 THEOPHILUS WESSEEN Theophilus Wesseen, Royal Swedish consul for Minnesota, with headquarters at Minneapolis, is not only ably serving the interests entrusted to him, but has also made many friends during the period of his residence in this city, and although but twenty-seven years of age, his experience and training well qualify him for this responsible office. He was born at Hogby, province of Ostergotland, Sweden, April 22, 1895, and attended the public schools of his native country, the University of Upsala and the University of Stockholm, being a graduate of both institutions. He completed a law course in the latter, and began his professional career in Stockholm, where he continued to practice until 1917. He also served as a lieutenant in the Swedish army and in 1918 was appointed an attache at the foreign office in Stockholm. He was then sent to Rotterdam, Holland, and later returned to the foreign office. In October, 1918, he was sent to the United States and on the 1st of June, 1919, was made acting consul of Sweden at Chicago, Illinois. He was appointed to his present post on December 1, 1919, when the Swedish government opened a salaried consulate at Minneapolis, in direct connection with the foreign office. Mr. Wesseen is an able diplomat, displaying sound judgment and great tact in the discharge of the varied and difficult duties that devolve upon him as consul for Minnesota. He is capably looking after the interests of the Swedish government in the state and the importance of his office is indicated in the fact that the welfare of two hundred and fifty thousand of his fellow countrymen is entrusted to his keeping. He keeps in close touch with the industrial development of Minneapolis and the state and is thus able to advise Swedish merchants or capitalists who are seeking business openings. Mr. Wesseen is the possessor of unusual linguistic ability, being able to converse fluently in the Norwegian, Danish, Dutch, German, Russian, French and English languages as well as in his native tongue. As the accredited representative of a foreign country the courtesy of all of the clubs of the city is extended Mr. Wesseen and he is a member of the University Club of St. Paul and the Odin and Athletic clubs of Minneapolis. He is a young man of exceptionally high intellectual attainments, broad culture and substantial worth, and judging from his past accomplishments the future holds for him great possibilities.
