Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical Vol II, pg 687-688 ANDREW J. WHALEN Andrew J. Whalen, branch manager at Minneapolis for the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York, is the possessor of those mental characteristics and qualifications which find manifestation in systematic effort, thoroughness and progressiveness- qualities which are most essential in the development of an insurance business. He is regarded as one of the company's leading representatives and is steadily developing the business in his district. Mr. Whalen is a middle-west man by birth, training and preference. He was born in Wilmington, Illinois, May 17, 1886, and is a son of James and Harriet (Geelan) Whalen, who were also natives of Illinois. His father is deceased. Having attended the public schools of his native city, Andrew J. Whalen continued his education in the Spalding Institute at Peoria, Illinois, from which he was graduated in 1903. He afterward engaged in the grocery business with his father for a few years and thus received his initial training, learning many lessons of value to him in his later business career. In 1907 he became associated with his present company as an office boy in the Peoria office. He has filled all the various positions in connection with the business to the responsible place which he now fills. He has had experience in the offices of the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York in Chicago, St. Louis, St. Paul and Minneapolis. In 1914 he located in St. Paul and was cashier with the company until he was made branch manager of the Minneapolis office, in November, 1921. He is yet a young man, having not yet reached the prime of life, but his close application and progressive spirit have well qualified him to take up the supervision of the interests now under his care and direction. On the 26th of September, 1914, Mr. Whalen was married to Miss Jane O'Brien of Chicago and they have two children, Robert Stanbury and Elizabeth Jane. Mr. Whalen belongs to the Life Underwriters Association of St. Paul, also to the St. Paul Athletic Club and to the Minneapolis Young Men's Christian Association. Those things which interest him are of constructive character, whether in relation to material, intellectual, social or moral interests. He has ever been actuated by a spirit of advancement and his diligence and determination have carried him to the point of success which he has reached in the insurance field.
