Omodt, Resident of This Section For 78 Years, Dies on March 12 Among the many who immigrated from Norway to Southeastern Minnesota in the early fifties were Mr. and Mrs. Ole Omodt from Stavanger. They left there April 15, 1854, on a small, two-masted sailing vessel, they crossed the Atlantic after a rough and stormy voyage of over nine weeks, landing in Quebec, Canada. By rail to Chicago, thence over land to Rock Island and thence by steam boat to LaCrosse in the early part of July. On July 18, 1854, the family came to Houston where after a few days of land seeking Mr. Omodt bought a tract of land about 5 miles west of Houston. Here he moved with his family and here he and his wife resided the rest of their lives. William Omodt, who died Sunday, March 12th, at the age of 82 years, was one of the children of this family, he being born at Helland, Sogn, Egersund, Norway, on Oct. 11, 1850. William was not quite four years old when the family settled on their newly acquired American farm. Here he grew up amid the hardships of the early pioneer. Here he worked, toiled and planned for over 78 years. The beautiful home and other modern buildings on the farm testify to the thrift and management of Mr. Omodt. He always found something to do and never enjoyed himself any better than when he was busy at his home. On the 12th day of September, 1895, he was united in marriage to Karine Peterson. They have five children who together with their mother, mourn the loss of a kind, faithful, considerate and unselfish father and husband. Three of the children, Bertram, Clement and Harris are at home, Maurice is in business at Perham, Minn., and a daughter, Miss Ruby Omodt, a nurse at Cleveland, Ohio. Two sisters survive Mr. Omodt, namely Mrs. Gesina Benjamin of Hastings, Minn., and Mrs. Bert J. Wigdale of Winona. Mr. Omodt was laid to rest in the Stone Church cemetery Thursday, March 18, funeral services being conducted from the home at 1:30 and from the Houston Lutheran church at 2 o'clock, Rev. J. O. Paulsrud officiating. The choir sand at the services. Edwin and Tenius Olson, Chas. Oien, Ed. Moen, Nels and Palmer Nelson carried Mr. Omodt to his final resting place. Thus another of the old pioneers has gone to his final reward, an outstanding example of the hardy, energetic and frugal men who contributed so much to the great transformation that has been effected through the past four decades, the fruits of which the present generation enjoy.
