H. Abbott was born in 1859 in Illinois. His wife, Lilly, was born in 1864 in Illinois. Children: Irene was born in 1889 in Minnesota; Vianna (sp?) was born in 1892 in Minnesota; Ina was born in 1893 in Minnesota. Mr. Abbott was a farmer who moved directly to Todd Township in the spring of 1886. On June 18, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated the Abbotts 39th in Todd Township. Cornelius A. Abbott was born in 1834 in Indiana. He was a carpenter and moved to Minnesota in February, 1885, and to the Hubbard Enumeration District in May 1895-. On June 5, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated Corneluis 27th in Hubbard. George Abbot was born in 1817 in Tennessee. His wife, Abigail, was born in 1837 in Canada. The 1885 state census lists him as a Union veteran, distinguishing him from many of his Tennessee relations. Children: Moses was born in 1860 in Minnesota; Angelina was born in 1872 in Minnesota; George was born in 1877 in Minnesota; and Margaret was born in 1881 in Minnesota. In May 1885 Samuel Churchill enumerated the Abbots eighth in Park Rapids. Irene Abbott was born May 20, 1889, in Hubbard County. Samuel Abbett was born in March 1834 in Indiana. In 1900 he stated that his father was born in New Hampshire and his mother in Vermont, but in 1910 he stated that his father was born in New Hampshire and his mother in Pennsylvania. He may not be related to other Abbot seftlers in the 1880's, and I include him tentatively until I can determine if he belongs among the later sefflers in volume two. ADAMS Mr. Adams of Warren Illinois was staying with G. B. King in Straight River while examining farmland, according to the November 23, 1882, Enterprise. Daniel Adams was probably born before 1850. The 1890 census does not give the age of veterans. Mary A. Adams (Dan's sister or wife?) was born in 1849 in Canada. Mary's parents were also born in Canada. Dan served as a private in the Sth Wisconsin Battery from June 1864 to July 1865. According to the July 25, 1882, issue of the Enterprise, Dan ran the stage line which brought passengers, freight and mail from Verndale to Shell City at 6:00 PM on Tuesdays and Fridays and returned to Verndale at 6:00 AM on Wednesdays and Saturdays. In June 1890 M. M. Loring enumerated Daniel and Mary A. Adams 76th in Hubbard. Mary may have previously been the wife (the census taker understood her to be the widow) of veteran Asel Homorel (Howard?). In 1892 Dan built a $200,00 house in Park Rapids. On June 15, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated Mary A. Adams in the house of Acel Howard, 21 St in Todd Township. Dennis Adams was born in 1864 in Vermont. His wife, Annie, was born in 1861 in Canada. Children: Maud was born in 1885 in Canada; Madge M. was born July 3, 1890, in Hubbard County. Dennis was a mill hand who moved directly to Todd Township in January, 1889. In 1892 Dennis Adams built a $150.00 house in Park Rapids. On June 12, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated Dennis' family 175th in Park Rapids. G. W. Adams was born in 1875 in Minnesota. On June 11, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated him with the family of Pascall Parks, 164th in Park Rapids. Living with the Parks family in 1895 was a large crew of men, perhaps a lumber crew for Herman Ellersick, including G.W. Adams, V. Bemis, Abe Breenesen(?), John Jeanquenat(?), Frank Kolar(?), Marty Kortjaval(?), Albert Lemke, Mike Loyd, Frank Marshier, M.S. Phelps, Charles Runholiz(?), P.D. Sackett, and Gust Witte. John Adams was born in 1845 in Canada. His wife, Emma, was born in 1854 in Wisconsin. Her father was born abroad, probably in Canada. Children: Ernest was born in 1877 in Minnesota, Ralph E. was born in 1889 in Minnesota; Orrin P. was born in 1892 in Minnesota. John was a Civil War veteran and laborer who moved to Minnesota in 1875 and to Park Rapids in the spring of 1892. On June 11, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated John's family 148th in Park Rapids. Leonard Adams died May 21, 1888, in Hubbard County. ADDISON Frank Addison came with his wife and two children from Greenfield, Indiana, with Captain Huntsinger, according to the August 24 and October 12, 1882, issues of the Enterprise. The November 16, 1882, Enterprise reported that in Frank's shot a 250 pound deer in his first hunt. Mabel Addison died October 24, 1889, in Hubbard County. Her family was not enumerated in the county in 1885 or 1895, but she may have been the wife of Frank or Wesley. Wesley Addison returned to Indiana satisfied with Hubbard County prospects, acccording to the October 12, 1882, Enterprise. AHERNS Nickolas (Nick) Aherns was born in 1854 in Germany. His wife, Angeline (Angel), was born in Germany in 1862. Children: Peter was born in December, 1884, in Minnesota; Katie was born in 1886 in Minnesota; John was born October 4, 1887, in Hubbard County; Joseph was born February 15, 1889, In Hubbard County; Mike was born April 29, 1890, in Hubbard County; Margaret was born October 24, 1891, in Hubbard County; a daughter who died in infancy was born July 26, 1892, in Hubbard County; Henry, who probably died young, was born February 10, 1893, in Hubbard County; Mary was born February 9, 1894, in Hubbard County; Christine, who also probably died young, was born May 25, 1897, in Hubbard County; Christine Katherine was born July 31, 1899, in Hubbard County. Nick Aherns was a farmer who moved directly to Todd Township in 1884. In May 1885 Sam Churchill enumerated Nick's family seventh in Park Rapids. On June 17, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated Nick's family 33rd in Todd Township. Living with Nick's family in 1895 was Theresa Mueller, perhaps Nick's sister or sister- in-law, and her three children. Nick died in 1923, leaving 11 children as heirs. ALLEN Mr. Allen had a opening stock of groceries and notions in his general store in Carson, according to the November 16, 1882, Enterprise. Floreston L. Allen was born in 1852(?) in Maine. His parents were also born in Maine. His wife, Lucinda (Marble?), was born in 1849(?) in New York. Her parents were also born in New York. Children: Florence was born in 1874 in Minnesota; William F. was born in 1875 in Minnesota; Ernie was born in 1877 in Minnesota; Bertha was born in 1882 in Minnesota. On July 2, 1880, William Denley enumerated Page 48 Floreston's family in township 139/140 of Cass County. The August 10, 1882, Enterprise states, ambiguously, that Mr. Allen would soon move his house into Manter. In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated them 48th in Hubbard. Living with the family in 1885 were E. M. Horton, age 22, William Marble, age 62, and A. 0. Brigsley, age 49. Many early settlers had borders, hired hands and chore girls. Working for a neighbor during the harvest was one of the first jobs a young person could get. This shared experience was part of the spirit of the community. Andrew Allen was a vice president in charge of celebrations of the arrival of the first train in Park Rapids on August 1, 1891. Grant Allen's new house in Park Rapids was valued at $500.00 in 1891. Grant played on the Park Rapids baseball team in June 1892. Lester Allen was a charter member of Boy Scout Troop 58 in October 1923. In 1790 there were 87 Allen households in Maine. AMMERMAN James Ammerman was mentioned as driving freight wagon teams between Park Rapids and Verndale in the July 25, 1882, edition of the Park Rapids Enterprise. ANDERSON Christian Anderson was born in 1857 in Norway. His wife, Lottie, was born in Norway in 1856. Christian was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in the spring of 1881 and to the Henrietta Enumeration District in October 1885. On June 11, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated Christian's family 45th in Henrietta Township. Living with them in 1895 was Hannah Josephson, age 4. ANTOINE Elijah Antoine was born in 1871 in Illinois. Lydia E. R. Antoine (perhaps his wife) died April 8, 1889, in Hubbard County. Elijah was a farmer who moved to Minnesota when he was two and to Akeley Township before 1895 (the year was not recorded in the census). On June 14, 1895, J. C. Bullock enumerated him in the house of C. V. Lucone, third in Akeley Township. ANTRIM Barbara Antrim was born in 1835 in Indiana. Her husband may have died by 1895. Children: Joseph A. was born in 1858 in Iowa; Thomas was born in 1870 in Illinois; Elijah was born in 1870 in Illinois. Joe Antrim was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in September, 1873, and to the Henrietta Enumeration District in November, 1885. Joe's brothers, Thomas and Elijah, were farmers who moved to Minnesota in the same year but did not move to Henrietta Township until the spring of 1889. On June 12, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated Barbara's family 50th in Henrietta Township. Living with the Antrims in 1895 was Earl Butterfield, age 12. Lydia E. R. Antrim died April 8, 1889, in Hubbard County, Thomas Antrim was born in 1870 in Illinois. Tom was a laborer who moved to Minnesota when he was two years old, and to Park Rapids in the spring of 1890. On June 5, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated him in the hotel of Ben Innman, 47th in Park Rapids. Tom was also enumerated in his mother's household. ARENS Peter Arens was born December 16, 1884, possibly in Hubbard County. No family of that spelling was enumerated in 1885 or 1895 in the county, so Peter's parents may have only been visiting in 1884. ARMBRUSTER Chris Armbruster was born in 1870 in Germany. His wife, Augusta, was born in 1876 in Wisconsin. Her parents were born abroad. Chris was a farmer who moved directly to Todd Township in the spring of 1890. On June 17, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated them 38th in Todd Township. An Armbruster boy was born February 4, 1895, in Hubbard County. Page 49 ARNOLD C. Arnold was born in 1855 in Michigan. His wife, M. S., was born in 1860 in Indiana. Children: Maud was born in 1894 in Kansas; Ella was born in 1887 in Kansas; Pearl was born in 1890 in Kansas; Maggie was born November 8, 1893, in Hubbard County. Mr. Arnold was a farmer who moved directly to Crow Wing Township in July, 1890. On June 4, 1895, J. C. Bullock enumerated the Arnold family eighth in Crow Wing Township, ARROWOOD Harold Leighton Arrowood died February 9, 1907, in Hubbard County. Jackson Arrwood(sp?) was born in 1865 in Kentucky. His wife, Tirzah,(Gardner?) was born in 1868 in Wisconsin. Their daughter, Lavina, was born in 1889 in Minnesota. Jackson was a farmer who moved to Minnesota as an infant and to Hubbard Township in March, 1894. On June 13, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated them fifth in Hubbard Township. James Arowood was born in 1850 in Kentucky. His wife, Rachael, was born in Kentucky in 1852, Children: Ellis J. was born in 1876 in Minnesota; Ida M. was born in 1878 in Minnesota; Louisa J. was born in 1881 In Minnesota; Thomas J. was born in 1884 in Minnesota; Martha D. was born in 1886 in Minnesota. James was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in 1869 and to Henrietta Township in April, 1894. On June 6, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated James'family second in Henrieffa Township. Moses Arrowood(sp?) was born in 1853 in Kentucky. His wife, Sarah, was born in 1857 in Kentucky. Children: Oscar D. was born in 1880 in Minnesota; Myrtle was born in 1882 in Minnesota; Bertha (sp?) was born in 1885 in Minnesota. Moses was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in 1865 and to Hubbard Township on June 10, 1895. On June 13, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated Moses' family sixth in Hubbard Township. Living with his family in 1895 were Minnie Devers(sp?), 29, and Petter Gardner, 33. Ruth E. Arrowood was born May 24, 1895, in Hubbard County. William M. Arrowood was born in 1860 in Kentucky. His wife, Flora (sp? Rodin?), was born in 1864 in Sweden. Children: Hulda was born in 1885 in Minnesota; May was born in 1890 in Minnesota; Alton was born in 1892 In Minnesota; Charles was born in 1894 in Minnesota. William was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in the spring of 1865 and to Henrietta Township in the spring of 1884 (?). On June 6, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated William's family fourth in Henrietta Township. AVENSON Jacob Avenson was born in May 1854 in Illinois, possibly in McHenry County. His father, Peter Avenson, was born in Norway. His wife, Christina (Carrie) Knutson, was born in March 1853 in Norway. They had nine children: Carrie was born in 1877 in Illinois; John was born in February 1878 in Illinois; Egbert was born in August 1879 in Illinois; Jacob was born in May 1882 in Minnesota; Peter was born in June 1884 in Hubbard County; Anna Serena was born July 5, 1886, in Hubbard County and married Anton Kripps; Julia Electa was born in January 31, 1889, in Hubbard County; William Racine was born January 20, 1892, in Hubbard County; Marta was born in 1893 in Hubbard County; Lorenzo was born July 23, 1895, in Hubbard County. Jacob Avenson was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in the spring of 1882 and to Henrietta Township in the spring of 1883. In May 1885 John Terweale enumerated the Avensons 19th in Elbow Lake. Despite mutual suspicion, Chippewas on the Government Trail to White Earth from Leech Lake would occasionally stop at the Avensons'for food. Once they lingered so long that Carrie went out and told them to move on. One of the fellows took offence at her tone and was about to strike her but she pulled her pistol from her apron and pointed it at him so he moved on. On June 11, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated Jacob's family 39th in Henrietta Township. On June 22, 1898, Jacob was appointed first postmaster of the Dorset Post Office . John Avenson was born in February 1878 in Illinois and he married Emma Rodin. Children: Marvin; Harry, who married Pearl Manlove in 1928. When the children were small they raised hogs which they took to livestock shows, such as one on Page 50 1919 in Crookston. John bought 80 acres north of Dorset before his marriage and another quarter in Henrieffa Township, which he farmed until his death in 1946. Peter Avenson was born in Dorset on June 12, 1884. He married Bertha Olson on August 25, 1912, in Dorset. They had four Children: Leon C. was born September 20, 1914. Leon married Annabelle Zeller June 18, 1937, and died December 10, 1987; Maynard M. was born about 1916 and married Eugenia Kellner; Lyle P. was born about 1918 and married Louella; and Donald C. was born about 1920 and married Wilma Morey. In 1906 Peter opened a general merchandise store In Dorset and he became the Dorset post master In 1910. He served on the Dorset school board from 1907 to 1921. Peter was also depot agent for the Great Northern Railroad. Peter was also Dorset town clerk, financial secretary of the First Luthern Church, member of the Redman and other commercial clubs, and director of the Farmers State Bank of Dorset. Peter was an independent in politics and enjoyed cards and farming. In the 1920's Peter and Egbert Avenson owned land in section 3 of Henrietta Township. BAILEY Frederick Bailey was born prior to 1850. He enlisted in Company B of the 17th Maine Infantry Regiment in January 1864. He was discharged in December 1864 as a private. In 1890 M. M. Loring enumerated Fred, suffering from a spinal injury and chronic diarrhea, in house 42 in Hubbard. Earl Bailey was assistant scoutmaster of the Boy Scouts when troop 58 was formed on October 25, 1923. BAKER Albert Baker was born in 1858 in Iowa. In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated him in the household of R. J. Rex in Hubbard. Farrand E. Baker was born in 1844 in Illinois. His wife, Sarah A., was born in 1847 in Illinois or Canada. Children: Lawrence was born 1870 In Iowa; Mary was born 1878 in Nebraska; Frank was born 1881 in Montana; Nellie was born in 1886 in Minnesota. Mr. Baker enlisted in Company I of the 14th Wisconsin Volunteer Regiment October 21, 1861. He was discharged October 9, 1865, as a first sergeant. Farrand was a land agent who moved to Minnesota in October, 1881. The August 3, 1882, Enterprise notes that Farrand's son, Luverne, had fractured his left arm above the elbow when he was thrown by his pony. Mr. Baker was a musician at the dance which innagurated Huntsinger's Hotel, according to the September 14, 1882, Enterprise. In May, 1885, John Moran enumerated Farrand's family 19th in Straight River. In January 1886 Farrand became a charter member of E. S. Frazier Post 147 of the G. A. R. He was post commander from January 1891 until January 1893. Farrand moved to Park Rapids in the spring of 1888. In June 1890 Dr. Walling enumerated Farrand, suffering from malarial poisoning and rheumatism, 36th in Park Rapids. On June 8, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated Farrand's family 83rd in Park Rapids. Verne Baker began work as Henry Cobb's printer's devil in time for the October 12, 1882, Enterprise. W. A. Baker was born in 1857 in Illinois. On June 7, 1895, J. C. Bullock enumerated him llth in Badoura Township. Mr. Baker was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in September, 1879, and to Badoura Township in February, 1895. He is included tentatively among the early settler families pending further evidence of relationship to prior Baker seffiers. BATEMAN George Bateman was born in 1858 in Wisconsin. George moved directly to Straight River Township in Minnesota in 1890. The birth of a son is recorded in the September 21, 1882, Enterprise. W. H. Batemen's new house in Park Rapids was valued at $600.0 in 1891. He may have been George's father. On June 21, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated George with the household of Anton Paulson, 13th in Straight River Township. Mr. Paulson ran a saw mill in Straight River since 1886. Living with the Page 51 Paulsons in 1895 were five mill hands; John Denning, 21, John Hall, 49, George Bateman, 37, Fred Ernst, 32, and Frank Thomas, 23. BATHKE Elvina Bathke was born in 1833 in Germany. Her husband may have died by 1895. Children: Fritz was born in 1862 in Germany; Gustave was born in 1867 in Germany. Fritz and Gustave were farmers. They moved directly to Todd Township in October, 1888. Alwina Bathke was a sponsor at the baptism of Emilie Hensel on July 29, 1890. On June 18, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated the Bathke family 42nd in Todd Township. Living with the Bathkes in 1895 were two Mertes children; Barney, age 2, and an unnamed five month old baby girl. Fritz Bathke was one of 16 signers of the constitution of the Evangelical Lutheran Peace Congregation on March 28, 1908. BAUGARTNER Jacob Baumgartner was born in 1857 in Wisconsin. His parents were born abroad. His wife, Rachel. was born in 1858 in Switzerland. Children: Fred was born in 1879 in Minnesota; Ernest was born in 1881 in Minnesota; Walter was born in 1883 in Minnesota. Mr. Baumgartner was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in 1869 and to Todd Township in December, 1890. Baumgarder & Schuman's saloon in Park Rapids was valued at $1500.00 in 1892. They also made $400.00 worth of additions to their new $250.00 houses. In June 1893 the barn in back of their saloon burned down, and the fire spread through four other buildings to Second Street. On June 10, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated Jacob's family 140th in the Park Rapids Enumeration District. Jacob Baumgardner served as a county commissioner from January 1901 to January 1905. BAYNE James A. Bayne was born in March 1858 in Ontario, Canada. His parents were born in Scotland. His wife, Leona (Lina?), was born 1865-1875 in Iowa. Both her parents were born in the United States. Children: Harry was born in 1886 in Minnesota; Agnes was born July 30, 1887, in Hubbard County; Clara A. was born in 1888 in Minnesota; Wilbur E. was born in 1889 in Minnesota; Leona was born February 25, 1890, in Hubbard County; Annie was born February 14, 1894, in Hubbard County. Mr. Bayne was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in the spring of 1876 and to Hubbard Township in the spring of 1885. In May 1885 John Terweale enumerated the Bayne family sixth in the Elbow Lake Enumeration District. James received $22.00 from Hubbard Township for I 1 days work as assessor in 1888. James served as a county commissioner from January 1893 until January 1897. On June 19, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated the Bayne family 60th in Hubbard Township. BEARDSLEY Clara E. Beardsley, an unmarried daughter of David Beardsley, was born in 1865. She taught at schools in the Hubbard Prairie, and once had a millinery shop in Hubbard. She owned land in section nine of Hubbard Township in the 1920s. Clara was talented in vocal music, painting,and poetry and pursued many intellectual and Christian concerns, and she had a fine sense of humor. She died of a broken hip at the age of 97 in 1 962. Dora Beardsley was born in 1871. Her father was David Beardsley, and she married Lewis P. Vogtman. Louisa Jane Beardsley was born in 1852. Her father was David Beardsley and she married Wesley Defenbaugh. Neffie Beardsley was born in 1867. Her father was David Beardsley, and she married Joseph Replogle. Otis Beardsley was born in 1859 in Michigan, according to his great- niece, Jeanette Beardsley. His father, David Beardsley, was born in 1824 in Hamilton, Ohio, and moved near Elkhart, Indiana, which was founded by his family and where his family later started Miles Laboratories. His wife, Perlie A. Yaeger, was born in 1867 in Iowa. Otis was a hardware merchant who moved to Minnesota in April, 1883. In May 1885 Page 52 Nelson Bement enumerated them 18th, in the household of Wesley Defenbaugh, in the Manter District. Otis and Pearlie moved into the village of Hubbard in December, 1889. On June 4, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated Otis and Pearlie third In Hubbard Village. The Beardsley's immigrant ancestor, William Beardsley, was born in 1605 in England, possibly near St. Albans, in Hertfordshire. William moved to Massachusetts in 1635 and to Stratford, Connecticut, by 1650. He was a deputy of the court at Hartford, Connecticut, for eight sessions. BECKEL Mr. Beckel left Carson (Osage?) in the "wee small hours," presumably without paying his bills, according to the September 7, 1882, Enterprise. BEMENT Alfred Bement was born in 1855 in Iowa. His wife, Annie (Campton?), was born in 1861 in Ohio. Children: Laura B. was born in 1892 (July 2, 1891?) in Hubbard County. Alfred was a farmer who moved to Hubbard Township in the spring of 1879. O'n June 20, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated Alfred's family 65th in Hubbard Township. Cassia Ester Bement was born December 14, 1895, in Hubbard County. E. L. Bement was born in 1866 in New York. His wife, Louisa, was born in 1866 in Iowa. In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated them 37th in Hubbard. E. L. may be identical with E. F(hard to read in census), who follows: E. F.(?) Bement was born in l865 in Connecticut (?). His parents were born outside the United States. His wife, Eliza, was born in 1865 in Iowa. Her parents were also born abroad. Children: Ruby was born in 1887 in Iowa; Hazel was born in 1889 in Minnesota; Daley was born in 1891 in Minnesota; Fay was born in 1893 in Minnesota. Mr. Bement was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in 1882. On June 13, 1895, J. C. Bullock enumerated them fifth in White Oak Township. George Bement was born in 1860 in Iowa. His wife, Lucy or Susie M. (Glass?), was born in 1862 in Minnesota. Her father was born abroad. Children: Ruth V. was born in 1887 in Minnesota; Vinnie V. was probably born October 22, 1890, in Hubbard County. George Bement was a farmer who moved to Hubbard Township in the spring of 1879. In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated George's family 72nd in Hubbard. Living with them in 1885 were John Glass, age 57, T. A. Glass, age 20, and John Bement, age 28. On June 20, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated George's family 66th in Hubbard Township. Living with the family in 1895 was John Glass, age 65, born in I reland. John F. Bement was born in 1857 in Iowa. His wife, Edith, was born in 1867 in Wisconsin. Edith's mother was born outside the United States. BOECKERS Lulu C. Boeckers died March 23, 1890, in Hubbard County. She may have been the Boeckers child born February 13, 1889, in Hubbard County. BOLTON William Bolton was born in 1851 in Michigan. His wife, Cora, was born there in 1860. Their son, Floyd Tracy, was born August 27, 1883, in Hubbard County. In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated them third in Manter. BOMBAUGH Robert Bombaugh(sp?), age 17, was enumerated by Nelson Bement with the Shavers in house 71 in Hubbard in May 1885. BONGA Descendents of George Bonga, the famous black fur trader, have resided along the upper Mississippi since the 1850's but I have not found early Hubbard County census records of descendents of this remarkable man. Reputedly of French, Indian and negro blood, George had a unique history before he arrived in the headwaters. Information about this family would be most welcome to the compiler. BOOROM Smith J. Boorom was born in 1834 in New York, possibly in Niagara County. His parents were also born in New York. His wife, Marinda A., was born in 1837 in Ohio, where her parents were born. In August 1883 Boorom was allowed $21.00 for his work by his fellow commissioners. Boorom served as a commissioner until January 1887. He was also the first elected county probate judge. After offering to help him put up hay they offered to share their supper with him, but he graciously declined when he noticed that the main course was boiled dog. The August 3, 1882, Enterprise reported that John Branham and E. A. Wright were already harvesting their barley, but that a bear had just carried off John's only sheep and a few hens. Doran, according to his son Bill, In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated the Branhams 12th in the Manter District. John served as Judge of Probate Court from January 1891 until January 1893. On June 20, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated the John's family 67th in Hubbard Township. In the 1920's John M. Branham owned land in sections 19, 24, 33 and 34 of Hubbard Township. The above anecdotes are from Jan Pike's excellent article in the centennial edition of the Enterprise. William Branham was born in 1829 in Indiana. On June 5, 1895, J. C. Bullock enumerated him in the household of his son, E. C. Branham, 13th in Crow Wing Township. William was a Civil War veteran and farmer who moved to Minnesota in 1869 and to Crow Wing Township in May, 1894. BREEZEE Benjamin Breezee enlisted in Company I of the 2nd Wisconsin Cavalry Regiment in 1861 and he was discharged as a private in 1865, according to his widow, Mary. Ben died of consumption August 18, 1888, and had probably been treated by Dr. Walling. In June 1890 Dr. Walling enumerated Mary 105th in Park Rapids. BREWER Joseph J. Brewer of Carson married Angeline Kinney, according to the November 16, 1882, Enterprise. Henry Cobb's Carson correspondent pronounded Joe "a stirring young man." The marriage was officially reported in the November 23, 1882, Enterprise. It had been only a news item the previous week, with the bride's name given as McKinley. The marriage took place at the residence of Henry Smith, at Shell Lake, Becker County, and was performed by C. M. Carson, justice of the peace. BRICK Michael Brick was born in 1855 or 1856 in Germany, possibly in the Rheinland. His wife, Maggie, was born in 1867 in Minnesota. Her parents were born abroad. They had 13 children: 'Nick" (baptismal name unknown) was born in Minnesota in 1862; Nicholas was born in 1885 in Minnesota; Mary was born in 1887 in Minnesota; Angeline (Angela) was born October 31, 1888 (1891?), in Hubbard County; Mikel was born March 28, 1890, in Hubbard County; Gertrude was born December 23, 1892, in Hubbard County; Ann was born May 16, 1893 in Hubbard County; Lena was born in March, 1894, in Minnesota. Elizabeth was born November 29, 1898, in Hubbard County. The Bricks were Roman Catholic, which also suggests that they came from southern Germany. Mike was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in 1882 to Todd Township in 1884. In May 1885 Sam Churchill enumerated Mike's family 20th in Park Rapids. On June 17, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated the family 34th in Page 60 Todd Township. In the 1920s Mike Ounior?) owned land In sections 18 and 19 of Todd Township. Magdelena Brick was born January 15, 1895, in Hubbard County. Nick Brick was enumerated seventh in Hubbard by E. R. Hinds on June 4, 1895. Nick was born in Minnesota in 1862. Both his parents were born abroad. He had lived in Hubbard Township since 1886. He had worked as an engineer for eight of the past 12 months. In the 1920s Nick Brick,the oldest of Michael's 13 children, owned land on Long Lake in section 17 of Hubbard County. BRIGGS Albert Briggs was the father of a boy whose birth was noticed in the October 26, 1882, Enterprise. BRIGSLEY A. 0. Brigsley was born in 1836 in Kentucky. His wife, Amanda, (L.) was born in Kentucky in 1842. Their daughter Estelie was born about September 1884 in Minnesota. In May 1885 they were enumerated In the household of T. L. Allen, number 48 in Hubbard. BROWER Brower Leavitt's new saloon in Park Rapids was valued at $1 1 00.00 in 1892. Julius Brower may have been a brother of Jacob, the first superintendent of Itasca Park. Willard Glazier published several books arguing that since Lake Itasca had several inlets the largest, which he called Glazier Lake, was "the" true source of the Mississippi. Jacob V. Brower, who had thoroughly surveyed the area, reported to the Minnesota Historical Society that Glazier was in error. Public interest in the historical and geographical controversy was instrumental in the establishment of Itasca Park in 1891, with Brower as its first superintendent. I include the Browers among the early settlers of Hubbard County by virtue of Jacob's surveying in the 1880's. BUCK Lewis Buck, a son of Thomas Buck, was born in 1870 or 1871 in Michigan. His wife, Amanda (Haberer?), was born in 1876 in Iowa. Her parents were born abroad. Lewis was a farmer who moved directly to Hubbard county in Minnesota in 1883. On June 10, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated them 146th in Park Rapids. Living with them and helping with housework was Ida Arrowood, age 16. Cliff and Louis C. Buck were a members of the village band when it was reorganized to "get down to business" by F. A. Vanderpoel in May 1895. Thomas E. Buck was born in July 1838 or 1839 in Michigan. His parents were born in Ohio. His wife, Louisa A., was born in 1841 in Michigan or Ohio. Her father was born in Massachusetts, and her mother was born in Maryland, Children: Homer was born in 1864 in Michigan; Louis was born in January 1871(?) in Michigan; and Clifford P. was born in 1879 in Iowa, and still lived at home in 1895. Thomas enlisted in Company I of the lst Michigan Engineers on November 20, 1863. He was discharged June 19, 1865, as a private. Tom was a farmer who moved directly to Todd Township in Minnesota in 1882. In the July 25, 1882 issue of the Park Rapids Enterprise Mr. Buck advertised his services drilling wells and selling and repairing pumps. The October 26, 1882, issue states that his store was opposite the Enterprise office. The November 16, 1882, Enterprise gives notice that Tom had given final proof in support of his homestead claim on the N.E. 1/4 of section 24-140-35 in Cass County to the land office in St. Cloud. D. H. Freeman recorded that the following had attested to Tom's continuous residence on and cultivation of that land: Charles Churchill, Charles F. Rice, A. E. Dickinson, C. Blaufuss, all of Park Rapids. In May 1885 Sam Churchill enumerated them 60th in Park Rapids. In January 1886 Tom was a charter member of E. S. Frazier Post 147 of the G. A. R. In June 1890 Dr. Walling enumerated them 69th in Park Rapids. On June 8, 1890, Tom and his wife became charter members of the First Baptist Church. In April 1891 he was chaplain at a celebration of the founding of E. S. Frazier Post 147 of the G. A. R. In 1892 Tom made $300.00 worth of additions to his Page 61 house in Park Rapids. On June 12, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated them 174th in Park Rapids. Also living with the Bucks in 1895 were Claude DeSmit, 25, and May Arr.... 21. BUCKHACKER Daniel Buckhacker was born 1842 or 1843 in Germany. His wife, Elizabeth M. (formerly married to Volkes?), was born in 1845 in New York. Stepchildren (?): Walter Vokes was born in 1873 in Iowa; Wallace Vokes was born in 1876 in Iowa; and Floyd Buckhacker was born in 1883 or 1884 in Minnesota; Fred D. Buckhacker was born in 1886 in Minnesota. . Daniel enlisted in Company H of the 25th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment on August 11, 1862. He was discharged June 16, 1865, as a private. Dan was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in 1883 and to Nevis Township in 1886. In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated them 36th in Hubbard. In June 1890 Frank Rossman enumerated Dan, in general ill health, third in Elbow Lake, but he received his mail in Hubbard. On June 7, 1895, J. C. Bullock enumerated Dan's family third in Nevis Township. BUCKINGHAM Jack/Jacob D. Buckingham was born in March 1850 in Indiana or Iowa. His father was born in Maryland, and his mother was born in Virginia or Indiana. His wife, Angelina (Rutherford?), was born in October 1858 (?) in Iowa. Her father was born in Kentucky, and her mother was born in Indiana or Ohio. Children: Bert R. was born in 1877 in Minnesota; Alvin E. was born in 1778 in Minnesota; Doney E. (A?) was born in 1879 or 1880 in Iowa; Roy L. (J?) was born in 1881 In Minnesota; George was born in 1883 in Minnesota; Rolland Kenneth was born April 1, 1886, in Hubbard County; R. J. was born in 1888 in Minnesota; Fred was born In 1890 in Minnesota; Richard Jacob was born May 9, 1892, in Hubbard County; Lyle was born in September, 1894, in Minnesota. Mr. Buckingham was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in December, 1874. On June 30, 1880, William Denley enumerated his family in township 139/140 of Cass County. In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated the Buckinghams fourth in Manter. Jack moved to Badoura Township in December, 1893. On June 6, 1895, J. C. Bullock enumerated Jack's family first in White Oak Township. BUDDE William August John Budde was born July 29, 1887, according to a delayed birth record filed in Hubbard County. His parents were not enumerated in the 1885 and 1895 census. BULLARD Colonel C. E. Bullard of Wadena County campaigned for election as a Republican in the October 26, 1882, Enterprise. He was clerk of district court in Verndale. BUSH Perry Bush drove freight wagon teams between Park Rapids and Verndale according to the July 25, 1882, edition of the Park Rapids Enterprise. The August 24 edition mentions that he was ready to start building a house near Jessie Benham. The October 12 edition mentions that his new house was on a lot next to Eugene Jay, and was visited by his father and sister. He may have had both a country and a town house. BUSTARD David Bustard was born in 1859 in Iowa. In May 1885 John Terweale enumerated him eighth, in the house of Sarah James, in Elbow Lake. BUTTERFIELD Earl Butterfield was born in 1883 in Minnesota. On June 12, 1895, E. R. Hinds he was enumerated with the family of Barbara Antrim, 50th in Henrietta Township. Earl was possibly a relation because he is not listed as a laborer. Edward Butterfield was born in 1859 in Wisconsin. On June 5, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated him in the hotel of Ben Innman, 47th in Park Rapids. Ed was then a laborer. He moved to Minnesota when he was a year old and moved to Park Rapids in the spring of 1886. Page 62
