W. Sanderson was a charter member of the Old Settlers Association in 1900. SANFORS  Frank Sanford was born in 1866 in Iowa.  His wife, Idella(?), was born in 1871 in Iowa.  Their son, Charley, was born in 1887 in Minnesota.  On June 15, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated the family 31 st in Hubbard Township.  Frank was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in 1867 and to the Hubbard Enumeration District in July 1879. Fred R. Sanford was born in April 1869 in Iowa.  He served as a county commissioner from January 1901 to January 1903.  He also served on the town board, as school treasurer and as deputy sheriff. Miles A. Sanford was born July 18, 1835, in Addison, New York.  His father, Lorenzo Sanford (1811-1883), was born in Dryden and died in Troupsburg, New York, and his mother, Hannah P. Smith (1815-1894), was born In Courtiandt, New York.  Earlier Smiths may have lived in Vermont.  Miles' wife, Mary M. Rutherford, was born in 1846 or 1847 in Indiana.  Mary's father, George Rutherford, was born in Kentucky and Mary's mother, Rachel Jester, was born in Ohio.  Miles' brother, Charles Sanford, married Sara Rutherford. Miles Sanford's Children: Frank G (L?), was born in October 1865 in Iowa, and his mother was born in Indiana Frank was away during the terrible winter of 1881 and he later married Dell Rex.  Willie C. was born in 1867 in Minnesota; Fred R. was born in April 1869 in Iowa; Addie Belle was born in 1871 in Minnesota; Stella May was born in 1873 in Minnesota; Emmer B. (Emma R. in the census) was born in 1876 in Minnesota; (Loren?) Lannie L. was born in 1882 in Minnesota; Lewis was born in 1882 in Hubbard County and married Mary McCullum; Jay was born January 11, 1885, in Hubbard County and married Vivian C. Adams. Miles Sanford served as a private in Company H of the 10th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment from 1861 to 1865, when he sustained a gunshot would to the hip.  Miles was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in 1865 and settled in Section 26 of Hubbard township in May, 1879.  On June 30, 1880, Reverend William Denley enumerated Miles' family in township 139/140 of Cass County.  Four of the Sanford children died the winter of 1881-1882, because nurse Honor Denley arrived too late from Wadena to save them.  The snow was so deep that the children's bodies had to be wrapped in quilts and passed through a window, and preserved  in a snow bank until the spring thaw permitted burial.  Of the children at home, only Fred survived that winter.  In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated Miles 28th in Hubbard.  In January 1886 Miles became a charter member of E. S. Frazier Post 147 of the G. A. R. In June 1890 M. M. Loring enumerated Miles 91st in Hubbard.  On June 15, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated the Sanfords 34th in Hubbard Township.  Living with the Sanfords in 1895 was Amelia Retzlaff, born in 1878 in Minnesota.  Both Amelia's parents were born outside the United States.  Miles died in 1906 in Hubbard Township. In the 1920s Charles C. Sanford and Frank Sanford owned land in section 26 of Hubbard Township.  Jay Sanford owned land in section 23 of Hubbard Township. Page 126   The Sanford's immigrant ancestor, Thomas Sanford (1608-1681) was born in Hatfield Broad Oak, Essex, England.  He was a son of Ezekiel Sanford, born in 1581 in Much Haddam, Hertfordshire, and Rose Warner, born in 1583 in Hatfield Broad Oak, Essex.  Thomas Sanford came to America with five brothers about 1634.  Thomas married Sarah (Meadows?) and later lived in Potsdam, New York.  Thomas died in 1681 in Milford, Connecticut.  In 1911 Carlton E. Sanford of Pottsdam, New York, published a history of families descended from this Thomas Sanford, SARTIN Mary Sartin, the first teacher in the pioneer school in Park Rapids in 1882, was not in town during the May 1885 census.  She may have been visiting relations during the summer.  On June 8, 1890, Etta Sartain became a charter member of the First Baptist Church. Etta Sartain was a charter member of the First Baptist Church of Park Rapids on June 8, 1890. SCHEERER Christina Scheerer was born November 1, 1861, in Roethenberg, Wuertemberg.  She married Dominic Anderl and died of consumption at the age of 34 on June 6, 1896, in Park Rapids.  Christina's brother, M. J.(?) Scheerer, & Dominic Anderl made $450.00 worth of additions to their paint shop and owned a house in Park Rapids valued at $600.00 in 1892.  In January 1900 M. J. Sheerer's saloon could be reached by phone by diali ng " 1 1 " and J. Sheerer's home by aski ng the operator for " 1 4." Jacob Scheerer was born in 1870 in Germany.  His wife, Frances, was born in 1876 in Austria.  On June 5, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated the family 49th in Park Rapids.  Jake was a blacksmith who moved to Minnesota in 1885 and to Park Rapids  1 887. John Scheerer was born in 1866 in Germany.  His wife, Johanna, was born in 1871 in Austria.  Children: Christina was born June 11, 1891, in Hubbard County; Frank was born September 23, 1894, in Hubbard County.  On June 8, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated them 131st in Park Rapids.  John was a painter who moved to Minnesota in March, 1883, and to Park Rapids in 1891. SCHEIDECKER Christ Scheidecker was born in 1857 in Ohio.  His wife, Gracy, was born there in 1858.  Children: John was born in 1878 in Minnesota; Elisabeth was born in 1880 in Minnesota; Frank was born in 1882 in Minnesota; and Carrie was born in 1884 in Minnesota; another child was born September 19, 1885, in Hubbard County.  In May 1885 John Moran enumerated the family 8th in Straight River. SCHERMERHORN Mann Schermerhorn was born in 1849 in New York.  His wife, Mary, was born in 1854 in Wisconsin.  Children: William was born in 1879 in Iowa; Martha was born in 1882 in Minnesota; Nettie was born in 1885 in Minnesota.  On June 20, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated them tenth in Straight River Township.  Mann was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in October, 1880, and to Straight River in the spring of 1890. SMEADER  George Smeader (Schmider) was born in 1865 in Germany.  His wife, Catherine, was born in Germany in 1864.  Children: Amelia (Emilie) Elizabeth was born February 23, 1890, in Hubbard County; Caroline was born in 1892 in Minnesota; Herminie Dorothea was born November 21, 1893, in Hubbard County and married ... Vierek; Ofto Johann Georg was born December 7, 1895, in Hubbard County; Leonard Andreas was born September 29, 1897, in Hubbard County.  On August 2, 1889, F. Georg Schmider and his wife, Katharina were sponsors at the first recorded baptism in St. John's Evangelical Congregation, that of Jakob Friedrich Haberer.  All the Schmider children were baptized in St. John's Evangelical Congregation.  On June 18, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated them 47th in Todd Township.  George was a farmer who moved to Minnesota Page 127 in 1880 and to Todd Township in November, 1887.  George was one of 16 signers of the constitution of the new Evangelical Lutheran Peace Congregation on March 28, 1908. SCHONEBERGER  Mike C. Schoneberger was born in December 1861 or 1862 in Illinois.   His parents were born in Germany.  His wife, Anna, was born in October 1862 in Minnesota, and her parents were also born In Germany.  Children: George was born in 1875 in Illinois; twins, Dora and Anna, were born September 8, 1893, in Park Rapids; Cathleen was born in 1894 in Minnesota.  Mike was a harness maker who moved to Minnesota in 1873 and to Park Rapids in 1887, when he opened the second harness shop in Park Rapids.  He also served as fire chief and was re-elected village treasurer on November 26, 1890.  In 1892 his new house in Park Rapids was valued at $700.00 and he spent $200-00 for improvements to his shop.  On June 8, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated Mike's family 85th in Park Rapids.  Mike served as superintendent of schools from January 1895 until January 1897 and as Court Commissioner from January 1907 until January 1909. SEARLES Chester Searles enlisted in Company C of the 9th New York Volunteer Regiment in 1861.  He was discharged in 1864, as a first lieutenant.  In June 1890 Dr. Walling enumerated him 60th in Park Rapids. William Searis and John Humphrey of Fargo in the Dakota Territory made a note to E. R. Hinds payable December 15, 1882, which he lost between the Third Prairie and Manter.  He requests that the finder not negotiate for the note and return his calfskin pocket book in the September 21, 1882, enterprise. SEMBER J. F. Sember was born in 1853 in Illinois.  His father was born in New Jersey and his mother was born in Ohio.  On July 3, 1880, Reverend William Denley enumerated him living single in Cass County township 139/140. SHARP L. W. Sharp of Shell City was appointed mail hauler from Verndale according to the July 25, 1882, issue of the Enterprise.  He was to deliver mail from Verndale to Shell City twice a week by 6:00 PM on Tuesday and Friday and return to Verndale at 6:00 AM on Wednesday and Saturday.  The Shell City post office had short hours, from noon until !:OO PM on Sundays. SHAUKER Traugott Shauker was born in 1857 in Germany.  Traugott was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in February, 1883, and to Nevis Township in October, 1883.  On June 5, 1895, J. C. Bullock enumerated him fourth in Nevis Township.  "Traugoft" could be translated as "true God" in English. SHAVER Howard Shaver was born in 1861 in Canada.  His wife, Margaret (Bombough?), was born there in 1863.  In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated Robert Bombough, age 17, with the Shavers in house 71 in  Hubbard. William H. Shaver was born in 1862 in Canada.  His wife, Margaret, was born in 1864 in Canada.  Children: James John Shaver was born June 20, 1885, in Hubbard County; Mary Agnes was born November 22, 1886, in Hubbard County; Ellen was born in 1889 in Minnesota; Howard was born in 1891 in Minnesota; Iva G. was born in 1894 in Minnesota.  William was a farmer who moved to the Hubbard Enumeration District in Minnesota in April, 1884.  On June, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated the family 33rd in Hubbard Township.  Living with the Shavers were Nancy Dissmore, born in 1875 in Iowa, Joseph Hart, born in 1872 in Minnesota, and George Tremble, born in 1875 in Michigan.  W. H. Shaver served as a county commissioner from January 1903 until he resigned in August 1906. Page 128 SHAW Alfred A. Shaw enlisted in Company A of the 3rd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment February 11, 1864.  He was discharged July 18, 1865, as a private.  In June 1890 M. M. Loring enumerated him 102nd in Hubbard. SHERMAN  Jennie Sherman was born in 1860 in Illinois.  In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated her in the household of J.W. Jarvis, 49th in Hubbard.  One of the first jobs a girl could get in those days was helping a neighbor's wife as a chore girl.  Chores such as cleaning, cooking, canning, and laundry lasted from sunup till sundown and involved very heavy lifting. SHIELDS  Robert F. Shields was born June 2, 1845, in Pennsylvania.  His father, James Shields, was born in Ireland and his mother, Susan Simmons, was born in New York.  In 1847 the family moved to Rock County, Wisconsin.  His first married Margaret Dinning (Denning?), who was born June 26, 1845, in Canada and who died November 5, 1894, in Minnesota.  Robert then married Augusta C. Knutson on February 19, 1896.  Augusta was born in February 11, 1860, in Minnesota.  Her father was born in Norway, and her mother was born in Pennsylvania.  Children by his first marriage: Winifred S. was born in 1868 in Iowa; Lydia F. was born in 1874 in Iowa; Mattie E. was born in 1879 in Iowa.  Roxie S. Shields died September 18, 1887. Robert Shields enlisted in the 12th Wisconsin Battery in August 1863 in Janesville Wisconsin.  He served in campaigns in Arkansas and Bentonville, North Carolina.  He was discharged September 12, 1865, as a private, after his right leg was removed in a camp hospital in Newbern North Carolina.  After the war he was hospitalized in David's Island, near New York City, and in Prairie du Chein Wisconsin.  He joined the Independent Order of Odd Fellows in 1871 in Painsfield Iowa and had other connections in Waverly, Iowa (Enterprise, August 17, 1882).  Bob Shields moved to Minnesota in 1880.  On July 3, 1880, William Denley  enumerated Robert Shields' family in township 139/140 of Cass County.  In 1881 he opened the "Pioneer Store," the first general store in Park Rapids, where Bishop's now stands, and he lived on the second floor.  In the July 25, 1882, issue of the Enterprise Shields advertised that he had sold his interest in dry goods to T. T. Smythe in order to concentrate on his grocery store.  He was appointed sheriff by the three commissioners on March 28, 1883, and served until November 23 that year.  He was also first chairman of the Park Rapids village council, where he served for four years, postmaster for eight years, and president of the school board for two years.  In November 1883 Mr. Shields offered two front rooms in his building, with light, fuel, and furniture, to be used free of charge for county business.  In May 1885 Sam Churchill enumerated the family 37th in Park Rapids.  In June 1890 Dr. Walling enumerated the Shields family 5th in Park Rapids.  On November 26, 1890, Bob Shields was again elected president of the village council.  In 1892 additions to his store were valued at $400.00. On June 10, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated Bob 137th in Park Rapids.  Living with him in 1895 was Augusta Swanson, age 35, who kept house for him and his daughter.  Bob shields belonged to the Democratic Party and the Methodist Church. SHOLTZ Charles Sholtz and A. C. Hughes of Shell City were headed to Dakota Territory to work the harvest, according to the July 25, 1882, issue of the Enterprise. SHOOP 0. S. Shoop had his new house in Shell City completed by J. F. Siegford, according to the November 30, 1882, Enterprise. SHORES Edwin A. Shores was born in 1840 in Vermont.  On June 13, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated him seventh in Hubbard Township.  He had a son born December 29, 1895.  Ed was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in 1886 and to Hubbard Township in 1891.  On June 13, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated him seventh in Hubbard Township.  Ed drove for Page 129 John Eddy on the 55 mile stage line from Verndale to Park Rapids from 1885 until July 1, 1891, when Eddy's heavy wagons were replaced by lighter ones operated by John Endres and Henry Wrogen (sp), then under contract to Gardner Cowles of Algona, Iowa, for the next four years.  By 1891 the roads had improved and the railroad had begun to take the heavy freight.  During six years on the rugged old road, Shores missed his scheduled times of departure and arrival on the 12 hour journey only once. SHUMACHER Fritz Shumacher (Schumacher, Shumeaker) was born In 1841-1843 in Germany.  His wife, Bertha, was born in Germany in 1860.  Children: Hulda was born in 1883 in Minnesota; Mary was born in 1885 in Minnesota; Willie was born in 1887 in Minnesota; Julia was born in 1889 in Minnesota; Gerst(?) was born in 1892 in Minnesota; Fritz (Fred) was born October 5, 1894, in Minnesota.  Fritz was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in the spring of 1883 and to the Henrietta Enumeration District in the spring of 1884.  In May 1885 John Terweale enumerated him without his family in the house of Frank Kruft, 12th in Elbow Lake.  On June 11, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated the family 36th in Henrietta Township.  Living with the family was Henry Patser (sp?), age 22. SIEGFORD J. (G?) F. Siegford was a master carpenter in Carson, according to the August 3, 1882, issue of the Enterprise.  The August 24 issue states he finished cufting his own grain and was ready to run his machine for others.  Siegford had the contract to construct the first church in Carson, according to the November 16, 1885, Enterprise. SIMON  Sifrin (sp?) Simon was born in 1840 in Germany.  His wife, Lucy, was born in Germany in 1847.  On June 15, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated them 16th in Todd Township.  Mr. Simon was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in December, 1880, and to Todd Township in 1888. SILL William L. Sill was born March 29, 1888, in Hubbard County SITZ  Herman Sitz was born in 1850 or 1851 in Detmold, province Lippe, Germany, according to family records.  His wife, Wilhemena (Minnie) Geske, was born in 1850 in Germany and died September 13, 1893, in Hubbard County.  Children: Bertha was born in 1872 in Germany.  Bertha married an Olson (?) and moved to Oregon; Caroline was born in 1875 in Germany, and probably died young; Edward was in born in 1877 in Germany.  He married an Olson (?) and moved to Oregon; Herman was born in 1880 in Germany.  He married Lena Adeline Senske, who had previously married a Budde, and they had nine children; Wilhelm was born in 1883 in Germany and died February 4, 1920.  His widow remarried a Rugroden; Otto was born in 1885 Minnesota and died young; August was born in 1887 in Minnesota and died on a boat to Germany during the 1918 flu epicemic, according to family records; Julius was born in 1888 In Minnesota, and married Louise Johanning; Paul August Franz was born March 20, 1891, in Hubbard County and baptized in St. John's Evangelical Congregation.  Paul married Mina, who had previously been married to a Kiest.  Herman Sitz was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in August, 1883, and to the Henrietta Enumeration District in September, 1883, according to his statement to Mr. Hinds.  Records of Marjorie Johanning Thompson suggest he may have come in 1886.  In May 1885 the Sitz family was enumerated  3rd in Elbow Lake.  On June 8, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated the Sitz family 15th in Henrietta Township.  In the 1920s Herman Sitz owned the southeast quarter of section 26 of Henrietta Township.  Julius Sitz also owned land in section 26 of Henrietta Township.  William Sitz owned land in section 25 of Henrietta Township. SKINNER Chloe Skinner was born in 1866 in Wisconsin.  In May 1885 she lived with the family of Ira Hutchinson, 48th in Park Rapids. Page 130 SLEEPER  C. B. Sleeper was the first judge of the 15th judicial district, which was created in 1887, to hold a session in Hubbard County.  Judge Sleeper held this session in Park Rapids in May 1888.  The 15th judicial district included Hubbard, Cass, Clearwater, Beltrami, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake of the Woods, Crow Wing, and Aitkin Counties, and the permanent seat of the court was in Brainard.  Judge Sleeper was accused of sending a railroad survey party through Hubbard County in 1888 to drum up local enthusiasm for his re-election, which it did.  However, Knute Nelson of Alexandria prevailed in other districts and won the judgeship. SLOAN Caroline Sloan was born in 1857 in Minnesota.  In May 1885 John Moran enumerated her in the household of Charles O'Brien, 13th in Straight River. Young Frank Sloan turned in a false alarm just as the fire in the Baumgardner & Schuman barn was extinguished in June 1893, and the police had to protect him from an crowd of angry volunteer fire fighters. John E. Sloan was born in 1860 in Minnesota.  His father was born abroad.  On July 15, 1895, J. C. Bullock enumerated him in the house of Frank Beden, llth in Arago Township.  Living them was Margaret Farnsworth, age 80, probably Frank's mother.  John was a farmer who moved to Arago Township in February, 1891. William Sloan was born in 1823 in Ireland, possibly in county Cavan.  His wife, Lydia, was born in 1830 in Wisconsin.  Lydia's mother was born abroad.  Children: Caroline was born in 1857 in Minnesota; Mary E. was born in 1858 in Wisconsin; son W. D. was born in 1858 in Wisconsin; John E. was born 1860 in Minnesota; Cora was born in 1862 in Minnesota; Cuylar A. was born in 1864 in Minnesota; Eu.(?) was born in 1865 in Minnesota; Catie was born in 1870 in Minnesota; Fred was born 1873 in Minnesota and died March 6, 1892.  William was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in 1859  and to Todd Township in March, 1882.  In May 1885 Sam Churchill enumerated the Sloans 10th in Park Rapids.  On June 15, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated them 30th in Todd Township.  Living with the Sloans in 1885 was Benjamin Tisdale, age 10.  Ben may have been orphaned, or his parents may have been traveling with their younger children, as no adult Tisdales or Teasdales were enumerated in 1895. George W. Smedley was born in 1850 in Ohio.  His wife, Anna, was born in 1863 in Germany.  Their son, George W., was born in 1890 in Minnesota.  On June 5, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated the family 41st in Park Rapids.  George was a stone mason who moved to Hubbard County in 1887. SMITH  Boston Smith and Reverend Whitney were sent by the Mankato Baptist Church to preach in Park Rapids in September 1883, Miss Smith was a teacher in 1888 at the private school located where the Baptist Church now stands, Her father homesteaded just west of Park Rapids.  The August 3, 1882, Enterprise reported that Miss Smith had just completed teaching a three month summer term. Charles Smith was an alias used by John W. Ja rvis, apparently while serving as a private in Company C of the 58th Illinois Infantry Regiment in 1863 and 1864.  More information on this brave fellow is located above under his real name. Elizabeth Smith was born in 1823 in England.  On June 17, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated her in the household of R. J. Rex. Chester A. Smith was born in 1864 in Maine.  In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated him in the household of Martin Rex, 29th in Hubbard. George Smith was born in 1864 in Pennsylvania.  In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated him in the house of A. A. True, 32nd in Hubbard. Henry Smith spent $500.00 on improvements to his house in Park Rapids in 1892. Page 131   John Y. Smith was born in 1853 in Illinois.  His wife, Elizabeth, was also born in Illinois in 1853.  Children: William was born in 1882 in Minnesota; Lorena was born in 1885 in Minnesota; Fanny was born October 23, 1894, In Park Rapids.  John was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in 1883.  He was appointed first postmaster of the Streeter Post Office on February 12, 1889.  The Streeter Post Office was merged with Shell City on October 31, 1889.  John moved to Park Rapids in December, 1890.  He served as county treasurer from January 1891 until January 1895.  His new house and barn in Park Rapids were valued at $1200.00 in 1892.  On June 11, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated the family 166th in Park Rapids.  John was a charter member of the Old Seffiers  Association in 1900.  He served as a county commissioner from April 1900 to January 1901, completing the unfinished term of C. 0. Todd. S. A. Smith served as a county commissioner from January 1901 to January 1 903. T. F. Smith's new house in Park Rapids was valued at $400.00 in 1892. W. C. Smith could be reached by phone at home in January 1900 by asking the operator for "70." SMYTHE T T. Smythe, of Elkport, Clayton County, Iowa, was expected to shortly complete his move to Park Rapids, with his stock of dry goods and notions, according to the July 25, 1882, issue of the Enterprise.  Robert Shields also advertised that he had sold his interest in dry goods to Mr. Smythe in order to concentrate on his grocery store.  Mr. Smythe occupied the south half of Bob Shields' store.  Mr. Smythe advertised for wheat in exchange for goods in the October 26, 1882, Enterprise. SOMBS A. H. Sombs was born in 1868 in Minnesota.  His wife, Flora, was born in Minnesota in 1878.  In June 1895 J. C. Bullock enumerated them 10th in Nevis Township.  Living with them were M. H. Marshall, age 26, and W. W. Snuth (sp?), age 23. A. H. Sombs was a farmer who moved to Nevis Township in November, 1888.   Joseph Sombs was born in 1834 in Canada.  His father was born abroad but his mother was born in the United States.  His wife, Elizabeth, was born in Canada in 1845.  Her parents were born in the United States.  Children: A. H. was born in 1868 in Minnesota; W. E. was born in 1872 in Minnesota; Ellis was born in 1875 in Minnesota; Irvin was born in 1881 in Minnesota; Blanche was born in 1885 in Minnesota.  Joseph Sombs was a surveyor and timber cruiser who moved to Minnesota in 1853.  He served as a private in the 4th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment during the Civil War.  He He "discovered" the first Shell Prairie, in 1878, eighteen years after it was first surveyed.  Joseph may have told many fellow Canadians who moved to Hubbard County about the opportunities for obtaining land here.  It would be interesting to plot the locations which the Canadian homesteaders chose against his early surveys.  Joe was the Wadena County surveyor when he platted the village of Park Rapids on August 8, 1882.  He recorded this survey with James Law (?), deputy clerk in Wadena County, and with Milton McFadden, register of deeds in Crow Wing County.  Park Rapids was then in Cass County.     The August 10, Enterprise states that Joe Sombs just bought a forty acre lot south of town on the river bank and would shortly move his family from their home in Verndale.  The Sombs family received their mail in Park Rapids in 1885.  Joe moved to Nevis Township in November, 1888.  Joe was away from house 4 in Elbow Lake when Frank Rossman  enumerated them in June 1890.  His wife, Elizabeth, did not have more specific information about his Civil War service, but told Frank that her husband suffered from general ill health.  In June 1895 J. C. Bullock enumerated Joe's family ninth in Nevis Township.  Both W. E. and Ellis Sombs were timber cruisers. Page 132 SNIDER Norton Snider died May 21, 1888, in Hubbard County.  No other Sniders were enumerated in 1885 or 1895, but they may have been temporarily away at census time, or living in a remote area. SPENCER William S. (L?) Spencer was born in 1836 in Vermont.  His wife, Sarah, was born in 1844 in Ohio.  Mr. Spencer was a Civil War veteran and farmer who moved to Minnesota in 1879.  William L. Spencer became a charter member of E. S. Frazier Post 147 of the G. A. R. in January 1886.  The Spencers moved to Park Rapids in December, 1893.  On June 8, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated them 106th in Park Rapids. STEBBINS  Mary Stebbins died October 16, 1888, in Hubbard County.  Her people may have arrived after 1885 and left before 1895.  They were not enumerated in the 1885 or 1895 census. STEELE Jerry A. Steele was born in 1847 in New York.  His wife, Mary Ann, (Parks?  Delaney?) was born His wife, Mary M., was born in New York between 1847 and 1850. . Children: Claude was born in 1878 in Minnesota; and Harry was born in 1883 in Minnesota; Lloyd was born December 15, 1892, in Hubbard County.  Jerry was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in 1868 and to Park Rapids in 1885.  In May 1885 John Terweale enumerated them 24th in Elbow Lake.  Living with them were Jerry's brother, C. D. Steele, born 1851 in New York, and Jessie Parks, born 1861 in New York.  In 1891 Jerry Steele's house and barn in Park Rapids were valued at $800.00. On June 11, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated the family 156th in Park Rapids. Oscar G. (J?) Steele was born in 1868 in Minnesota.  His wife, Lilly, was born in 1873 in New York.  Their daughter, Jennie May, was born May 12, 1894, in Hubbard County.  On June 14, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated them llth in Todd Township.  Oscar was a farmer who moved directly to Todd Township in 1891. W. S. Steele was born in 1849 in Indiana.  In June 1885 he was living with the family of Joseph Delaney, 73rd in Hubbard. STEVENS Miss Stevens of the Third Prairie visited Park Rapids with Miss Doran of Shell Lake, according to the September 21, 1882, Enterprise. STOMBAUGH  Jacob D. Stombaugh was born November 29, 1823, in Akron, Ohio.  The Stombaughs belonged to the United Bretheren Church and moved to Shell City in 1882.  The September 21, 1882, Enterprise reported that his wagon and blacksmith shop in Shell City was open for repair business.  J. D. died near Hubbard on March 9, 1884, leaving a wife and six children, including James and William.  Notice of his death was published in the Enterprise issue of March 14, 1884. James Stombaugh was born in 1857 in Wisconsin.  His wife, Rena M., was born in 1863 in Iowa.  Her father was born outside the United States.  Children: Sarah E. was born in 1886 in Iowa; Maggie E. was born in 1891 in Minnesota.  On June 6, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated the family ninth in Henrietta Township.  James was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in March. 1884, and to the Henrietta Enumeration District in October, 1892. William M. (Bill) Stombaugh was born in 1859 in Wisconsin.  His wife, Clista (sp?) was born in Wisconsin in 1855.  Both their parents were born in the United States.  The Stombaughs moved to Minnesota in February, 1883, and to the Hubbard Enumeration District in March, 1886.  Bill worked full time as a blacksmith in Hubbard.  On June 4, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated them second in Hubbard. STONE  Collingwood Stone was born in 1830 in Canada, possibly in Missisquoi County, Quebec, on the border of Vermont.  His parents were born in the United States.  Mr. Stone was a farmer who moved directly to Hubbard County, Minnesota, in November 1880.  In Page 133 May 1885 Sam Churchill enumerated him 52nd in Park Rapids.  On June 5, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated him 52nd in Park Rapids.  He died June 25, 1895, in Park Rapids. STOWELL Alvin W. Stowell was born in May 1849 in Wisconsin or Iowa.  His father was born in Ohio and his mother was born in New York.  In May 1885 John Moran enumerated him in the household of Jacob Lewis Jr., fifth In Straight River.  In May 1892 Alvin was planning to give up his job as a correspondent for the Staples World, writing lively local stories about Hubbard County events, and to begin publication of a Simon Pure Democratic newspaper in Park Rapids. Bertha May Stowell was born December 19, 1890, in Hubbard County. Danoris Stowell was born in 1820 in New York.  His wife, Jane, was born in 1829 in Ohio.  In May 1885 John Moran enumerated them 20th in Straight River.  Darius Stowell died January 23, 1890, in Hubbard County (possibly "Gustram's" child?).  On June 13, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated Jane eighth In Hubbard Township, living alone next to William Wood.  The dates when she moved to Minnesota and Hubbard Township were not recorded by Mr. Hinds. Early Stowells had settled in Hingham, Massachusetts, by the 1650s. Gustram (sp?) R. Stowell was born in 1862 in Iowa.  His wife, Cinnia, was born in 1871 in Wisconsin.  Children: son, Derias, was born in 1890 in Minnesota; Ben was born in 1892 in Iowa; Julius was born in 1894 in Iowa.  On June 11, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated the family 38th in Henrietta Township.  Gustram was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in the spring of 1887 and to the Henrieffa Enumeration District in the spring of 1894. STEWART Stewart's stage line to Shell City, with Bert Richards handling the reins, was well patronized according to the October 26, 1882, Enterprise. STUART A. D. Stuart was born in 1828 in Canada.  His wife, Sophia, was born in Canada in 1833.  Children: Alexander was born in 1869 in Canada; James was born in 1871 in Canada; Charles was born in 1873 in Canada; Albert was born in 1877 in Canada; Myrtle was born in 1879 in Indiana (?).  Mr. Stuart was a Farmer who moved directly to Crow Wing Township in 1887, On June 4, 1895, J. C. Bullock enumerated the family fourth in Crow Wing Township. John C. Stuart was appointed first postmaster of the Laporte (formerly Ann) Post Office on December 11, 1901. M. Stuart was born in 1862 in Canada.  His wife, Virginia, was born in 1870 in New York.  Children: M. was born in 1889 in Colorado; Alice was born in 1891 in Colorado; Estella was born in 1894 in Minnesota.  On June 4, 1895, J. C. Bullock enumerated the family third in Crow Wing Township.  Mr. Stuart was a Farmer who moved directly to Crow Wing Township in October, 1886. TABER William M. Taber was born in 1868 in New York.  His wife, Ethel A. (Bell?), was born in 1866 in New York.  Mr. Taber was a banker who moved to Minnesota in 1873 and to Park Rapids in 1891.  He was cashier.of the Shell Prairie Bank in 1883.  In 1892 Taber's new house in Park Rapids was valued at $1400.00. In June 1892 he was captain of the Park Rapids baseball team.  On June 7, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated his family 77th in Park Rapids.  Living with them was Anna Bell, age 54.  In January 1900 he could be reached by phone at home by asking the operator for "89." William Taber owned land in section three of Straight River Township in the 1920s. TALLER Rebecca Taller was born in 1825 in New York.  In May 1885 she lived with the family of Charles Rice, which Sam Churchill enumerated 45th in Park Rapids. TAPLIN A Taplin boy was born July 7, 1889, in Hubbard County.  His parents were not enumerated in the 1885 or 1895 census. Page 134   TAYLOR  Arthur Taylor was born in 1872 in Illinois.  His father was born abroad.  On June 12, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated him in the household of John Delezene, 177th in Paek Rapids.  Also living with the family was Henry Wergin, 36.  Arthur moved directly to Todd Township in 1882. TERWEALE John H. Terweale was born in April 1860 in Holland.  His wife, Francie, was born in 1863 in Germany.  Children: Amilie (a step child?) was born in 1883 in Germany; Willie was born October 23, 1888, in Hubbard County; John was born September 16, 1891, in Hubbard County.  John was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in the spring of 1883 and to the Henrietta Enumeration district In the spring of 1896.  He enumerated himself last (26th) in Elbow Lake in May 1885.  He was twenty-five and not yet married when he took the census.  On June 8, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated the Terweale's 18th in Henrietta Township.  Johnny died April 4, 1907, in Hubbard County-In the 1920s Francis Terweale owned the northwest quarter of section 26 of Henrietta Township.  The surname Terweale has several spellings: Terweel in Friesland, Terwel in Gelderland, and Terwiel in Zuid Holland. THEINS Mike Thienes was born in 1866 in Michigan.  His parents were born abroad.  His wife, Belle, was born in 1871 in Minnesota.  Children: Orpha was born in 1888 in Minnesota; Hazel was born in 1892 in Minnesota; Michael Henry was born July 1, 1894, in Hubbard County.  Mike was a bar tender who moved directly to Hubbard County, Minnesota, in 1886.  On June 8, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated his family 116th in Park Rapids.  Mike (Thenis) died July 14, 1896, in Hubbard County. THOMAS Frank Thomas was born in 1872 in Ohio.  On June 21, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated him with the household of Anton Paulson, 13th in Straight River Township.  Mr. Paulson ran a saw mill in Straight River  since 1886.  Living with the Paulsons in 1895 were five mill hands; John Denning, 21, John Hall, 49, George Bateman, 37, Fred Ernst, 32, and Frank Thomas, 23.  Frank moved to Minnesota in 1879 and to Straight River in 1887. Dr. Thomas moved to Manter about 1889.  H. Thomas served as County Coroner from January 1889 until January 1891. THOMPSON H. H. Thompson was born in 1856 in New York.  His wife, Thakla, was born in 1872 in Minnesota.  Her parents were born abroad.  Children: Sophrinia was born in 1890 in Minnesota ("Servina A." died October 15, 1900, in Hubbard County); Ray A. was born in 1888 in Minnesota; Annie E. was born in 1892 in Minnesota.  On June 5, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated the family 45th in Park Rapids.  Mr. Thompson had worked as a laborer six months in the past year.  He moved to Minnesota in 1876 and to Park Rapids in May, 1894. James A. Thompson was born in 1848 in Massachusetts.  His wife, Clara, was born in 1859 in Illinois.  Children: James A. was born in 1874 in Illinois; John A. was born in 1876 in Illinois; Lena was born in 1878 in Illinois; and Lillie was born in 1880 in Minnesota.  In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated the Thompsons 62nd in Hubbard. Jennie Thompson was born in 1853 in Norway.  Her son, Dan Anton, was born in 1877 in Wisconsin and died September 8, 1908, in Hubbard County.  Both his parents were born abroad.  On June 14, 1895, J. C. Bullock enumerated them sixth in Akeley Township.  Mr. Bullock did not record the date they moved to Minnesota or their means of livelihood (probably a farm).  Living with them were G. M. Eliot, age 40, and Frederick Bailey, age 57. Mary J. Thompson was born in 1833 in New York.  On June 15, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated her in the house of Acel Howard, 21st in Todd Township. THURMAN William Thurman was born in 1853 in Ohio.  His father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother was born in Tennessee.  His wife, Laura, was born in 1855 in Wisconsin.  Her father was born in Kentucky and her mother was born in Ohio.  Children: Jesse was born In March 1880 in Minnesota.  They were enumerated on June 30, 1880, by Reverend William Denley in townships 139/140 of Cass County. TIBEAU Alex Tibeau (spelled Tebeau in census) was born in 1861 in Wisconsin.  His father was born abroad, possibly in Canada.  His wife, Susana, was born in Wisconsin in 1860.  Her father was also born abroad.  Children: Mathew G. was born in 1884 in Iowa; Perdell Mabel was born August 19, 1885, In Hubbard County; a twin was born the same day;  Adeline was born May 15, 1887, in Hubbard County; Maria was born August 21, 1888; Clement was born January 15, 1890, in Hubbard County; Veronica was born December 22, 1891, in Hubbard County; Mathew P. was born in 1894 and died February 28, 1901, in Hubbard County; Mary Ann was born August 22, 1896, and died September 13, 1898, in Hubbard County; Lewis was born August 17, 1898, in Hubbard County.  On June 22, 1895, B. Tinkiss was born in 1858 in Canada.  His wife, Isabella, was born in Canada in 1864.  Children: Effie E. was born in 1883 in Minnesota; Myrtle C. was born in 1886 in Canada; Stanley H. was born in 1888 in Canada; Ray was born in 1894 in Hubbard County.  On June 17, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated the family 41st in Hubbard Township.  Levi was farmer who moved to the Hubbard Enumeration District in the spring of 1889. Simeon Tinkiss was born in 1855 in Canada, possibly in Stormont or Dundas County, Ontario.  His parents were also born in Canada.  His wife, Malinda (Grant?), was born in Canada in 1859.  Their son, Percy, was born in September 30, 1894, in Hubbard Township.  Simeon was a farmer.  He was probably related to the neighboring Hough family, also from Canada.  On June 25, 1880, William Denley enumerated Simeon living alone in township 139/140 of Cass County.  Simeon moved to the Hubbard Enumeration District in the spring of 1882.  In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated his family 26th in Hubbard.  On June 19, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated them 53rd in Hubbard Township.  Living with them in 1895 was Mary Grant, age 75, born in Canada. William Samuel Tinkiss was born in 1864 in Canada.  His wife, Minnie, was born in Canada in 1872.  On June 19, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated them 55th in Hubbard Township.  William was a farmer who moved to the Hubbard Enumeration District in the spring of 1883.  He died November 25, 1905, in Hubbard County. TISDALE Benjamin Tisdale was born in 1885 in Minnesota.  His parents were born in the United States but were not counted in the 1885 or 1895 census.  Perhaps they arrived after 1885 and left before 1895, or his father died and his mother remarried.  James R. Tisdale was born July 13, 1887, in Hubbard County.  Catherine Tisdale, perhaps their sister, died September 5, 1887, in Hubbard County.  Another Tisdale girl was born March 3, 1889, in Hubbard County.  On June 15, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated Benjamin, age 10, in the household of William Sloan, 30th in Todd Township. TODD Charles 0. Todd was born in 1855 in Iowa or Indiana.  His parents were born in Ohio.  His first wife, Jennie Perrin, was born June 10,  1856, in Canada.  She was the first white woman to live permanently on the Second Prairie.  Children: Minnie was Page 136 born in 1875 in Iowa; James was born in 1876 in Iowa; Mary was born in 1879 in Minnesota.  Mamie was born about May 1980 in Minnesota; Bertie and Mertie were born January 29, 1883.  This family was enumerated in June 1880 in Wadena, and Jennie Perrin Todd died May 14, 1883, in Park Rapids. Charles 0. Todd's second wife, Fanny (Churchill?), was born in 1859 in North Carolina.  Children: Maggie was born in 1886 in Minnesota; Laura F. was born May 10, 1891, in Minnesota; Thomas Otis was born June 16, 1893, In Hubbard County.  Charles was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in 1879 and to Hubbard County in 1880.  In the October 26, 1882, Enterprise Henry Cobb congratulates Charlie on his neat new house.  On April 19, 1884, Charles made a motion that roads be run along township lines in Todd Township.  In May 1885 Sam Churchill enumerated the family 50th in Park Rapids.  Living with them were Lawrence Churchill, age 5, and Pearl Churchill, age 3. C.O. Todd served as a county commissioner from January 1891 until he resigned in February 1900.  On June 8, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated them 123rd in Park Rapids.  Still living with the family were Lawrence Churchill, 15, Pearl Churchill, 13, and Charles' daughter by his first wife, Mamie Todd, age 15. Flora Verne Todd was born June 15, 1895, in Hubbard County. Guy A. Todd was born March 24, 1888, in Hubbard County.  He served as county surveyor from January 1915 until January 1927, and drew plat maps showing land ownership for many townships in the 1920s. Harry Smith Todd was born April 7, 1892, in Hubbard County. Laura F. Todd was born May 10, 1891, in Hubbard County. Samuel M. Todd was born in November 1856(?) in Maine.  His father was born in New Hampshire but his mother was born in Maine.  His wife, Annie A., was born in 1863 in Pennsylvania.  They were married after 1880.  Their son Lynn was born in 1884 in Minnesota.  On July 1, 1880, William Denley enumerated Sam in township 139/140 of Cass County.  On March 28, 1883, Sam was appointed temporary county superintendent of schools by the three commissioners and he served until April that year.  In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated the Todds 47th in Hubbard. Smith M. Todd was born in September 1831 in New York.  His father was born in Connecticut and his mother was born in New York.  His wife, Miranda, was born in May 1829 in Ohio.  Her father was born in Maryland or Ohio and her mother was born in New York or Ohio.  Smith and Miranda were married about  1851.  Children: S. P. Todd was born in 1854 in Maine; Charles Todd was born in 1855 in Indiana; Thomas was born in 1859 in Iowa.  Smith M. enlisted in Company C of the 6th Iowa Cavalry Regiment September 22,1861.  He was discharged October 17, 1865, as a corporal.  Mr. Todd was a farmer who moved directly to Hubbard County (then Cass County), Minnesota, in 1879.  On July 1, 1880, William Denley enumerated the family in township 139/140 in Cass County.  In May 1885 Sam Churchill enumerated them 22nd in Park Rapids.  Living with them was Joe Todd, perhaps a grandson, born in 1883 in Minnesota.  In January 1886 Mr. Todd became a charter member of E. S. Frazier Post 147 of the G. A. R. On December 17, 1888, he became one of the three initial trustees of the newly-incorporated First Methodist Church.  In 1890 Dr. Walling enumerated Smitty 39th, suffering from blindness caused by measles, in Park Rapids.  On June 8, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated the Todds 122nd in Park Rapids.  Still living with them was Joseph Todd, born in 1883 in Minnesota.  Miranda died October 8, 1908, in Hubbard County. S. P. Todd was born in 1854 in Maine.  His wife, A.A. Todd, was born in 1862 in Pennsylvania.  The Todds moved to Minnesota In February, 1879, and to the Hubbard Enumeration District in March, 1880.  He was a full time farmer.  On June 4, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated them first in Hubbard.  In the 1920s S. P. Todd owned land in sections 19 and 20 of Hubbard Township. Thomas A Todd was born in 1859 in Iowa, His wife, Fanny E., was born in 1864 in Maine.  Her father was born abroad, perhaps in Canada.  Children: Guy A. was born March 24, 1888, in Hubbard County; Burr 0. was born December 21, 1889, in Page 137 Hubbard County; Harry Smith was born April 7, 1892, in Hubbard County.  Thomas was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in February, 1879, and to Todd Township in 1881.  In May, 1885, Sam Churchill enumerated him 23rd, living alone, in Park Rapids.  On June 15, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated his family 24th in Todd Township.  Thomas Otis Todd was born June 16, 1893, in Hubbard County. In 1800 there were Samuel Todds living in York, Cumberland and Lincoln Counties in Maine.  In 1790 there were 10 Todd households In Maine.  The Todds also may have roots in the New Haven colony in the 1640's. TOLLE Henry Tolle was born in 1855 or 1857 in Germany.  His wife, Mary, was born in Germany in 1859.  Children: Henry was  born in 1888 in Mlnnesota; Louise was born in 1889 in Minnesota; Lena was born in 1891 in Minnesota; William was born in 1893 in Minnesota; Edward was born In 1894 in Minnesota.  Henry Tolle was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in July, 1881, and to Henrietta Township In August, 1881.  In May 1885 John Terweale enumerated him 9th, living alone, In Elbow Lake Enumeration District.  On June 8, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated his family 17th In Henrietta Township.  Living with the family were Abina Dresler, 14, Mary Dresler, 14, both born in Germany, and Percy Rathburn (sp?), 38, a carpenter born In Iowa.  In the 1920s Mary Tolle owned the southwest quarter of section 26 of Henrietta Township. TOMAZIN Father Ignatius Tomazin, of Wadena, succeeded Father Gunkel at the Park Rapids Catholic mission in 1886.  He celebrated the first Mass in St. Peter's Catholic Church in Park Rapids on May 6, 1887.  St. Peter's, a 25 by 40 foot structure located about a block south of the present Catholic church, was the first church completed in Park Rapids.  Father Tomazin came to Park Rapids to say Mass four times a year in 1886 and 1887, but in 1888 he made the trip from Wadena once a month. TOOLEY Eliza Tooley became a charter member of the First Baptist Church of Park Rapids on June 8, 1890. TOWN Mr. Town of Carson visited his father-in-law, A...... according to the November 16, 1882, Enterprise. TREAT Frank Ellis Treat and his wife were charter members of the First Baptist Church of Park Rapids on June 8, 1890.  Ada M. Treat was born July 14, 1890, in Hubbard County.  Frank died February 25, 1895, in Hubbard County. TRUE Augustus A. True was born in 1845 or 1846 either in Maine or possibly in Cass county, Michigan.  His wife, Lucy J., was born in 1848 or 1849 in Michigan.  Children: A.W. was born in 1869 in Iowa; Evey was born in 1872 in Iowa; Guy (Zeb?) was born in 1875 in Iowa; Daisy B. was born in 1877 in Iowa; Bessie D. was born in 1878 or 1879 in Iowa; Harry was born in 1883 in Minnesota; Mable was born in 1886 in Minnesota; Florence was born in 1892 in Minnesota.  Mr. True served in the Civil War from March 16, 1865, until August 5, 1865.  He was a farmer and  moved to Minnesota in April, 1881, and to Crow Wing Township in June, 1881.  Mr. True served as superintendent of schools from April 1883 until January 1887.  In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated the family 32nd in the Hubbard Enumeration District.  A hired hand, George Smith, age 21, then lived with the Trues.  In June 1890 M. M. Loring enumerated them 102nd in Hubbard.  On June 5, 1895, J. C. Bullock enumerated them 12th in Crow Wing Township. C. C. True was born in March 1846 in Maine.  His father was born in Massachusefts. Page 138 Henry True, father of the above, was born in 1808 in Massachusetts.  In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated him living alone in house 54 in Manter (Hubbard).  Earlier Trues had seffled in Salem Massachusetts by the 1640's. TRUHN  Frank Truhn was born in 1848 in Prussia.  His wife, Anna (Guenthart?), was born 1847 in Switzerland.  Children: George A. was born in 1872 in Minnesota; William F. was born in 1875 in Iowa; and Frank E. was born in 1881 in Minnesota.  Frank Truhn Senior was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in the spring of 1865 and to the Hubbard Enumeration District in the spring of 1888.  On June 18, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated the Truhn's 45th in Hubbard Township. George A. Truhn later farmed in Henriefta Township.   TUBBS  Samuel C. Tubbs' new house in Park Rapids was valued at $300.00 in 1892.  S. J. Tubbs' new house was valued at $150.00. In May, 1895, Mr. Tubbs was a member of the village band, which F. A. Vanderpoel had recently reorganized to "get down to business." Samuel died September 10, 1902, in Hubbard County. TURNBULL Peter Turnbull was born in 1851 in Canada, possibly in Wentworth county, Ontario.  His wife, Mary, was born in Canada in 1860.  Children: Leonard was born in 1880 in Canada; George was born in 1882 in Canada; Charles was born about July 1884 in Minnesota; a daughter was born December 18, 1885, in Hubbard County; Thomas M. was born November 10, 1888, in Hubbard County.  In May 1885 Sam Churchill enumerated Peter 32nd in Park Rapids.  Peter served as a county commissioner from January 1887 until January 1891.  Mary J. Turnbull died June 8, 1 889. TURNER A. A. Turner's new grain elevator in Park Rapids was valued at $3000.00 in 1892. VAIL  Frank Vail was counted twice by John Terweale in May 1885.  Frank lived with the family of W. H. Martin, enumerated 13th in Elbow Lake.  Mr. Martin told the census taker that Frank was age 19 and born in Ohio.  Frank's father, 0. P. Vail, told the census taker that Frank was age 18 and born in Illinois.  This suggests that Frank was born about May 1966 and had just turned 19. Oliver Perry Vail was born in June 1848 (?) in Virginia, possibly in Berkeley or Botetourt County.  His mother was born in Ohio.  His wife, Sarah, was born in 1853 or 1854 in Illinois or Indiana.  Children: Morris was born in 1865 in Illinois; Frank was born about May 1866 in Illinois; Bessie was born in 1871 in Ohio; and (by Sarah?) Harvey was born in 1880 or 1881 in Ohio.  Oliver was a farmer who moved to the Hubbard Enumeration District by December, 1880.  In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated his family 56th in Hubbard.  On June 15, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated them 21st in Hubbard Township.  Sarah died January 10, 1905, and Oliver died December 31, 1915. VALE Henry M. Vale was born in 1841 in Virginia.  His parents were also born in Virginia.  His wife, Elizabeth, was born in 1844 in Ohio, where her parents were born.  Children: Minnie C. was born in 1867 in Ohio; Perry E. was born In 1869 in Ohio.  They came with James Campton from Ohio by rail to Verndale, and from there by team to seftle in section 28 of Hubbard township in April 1879.  They were the first year-round white settlers in the county.  On June 26, 1880, William Denley enumerated them in township 139/140 of Cass County. VANDERPOEL Florance Alberto Vanderpoel (see photo) was born August 13, 1856, in Newport, Sauk county Wisconsin.  His parents were Clarence C. Vanderpoel and Emily A. Squire.  He married Edith Evelyn Rice August 9, 1888, in Park Rapids.  She was born in August Page 139 1867 in Iowa.  Children: Lucille was born in 1889 in Minnesota; Ida B. died an infant on October 20, 1892; Paul M. was born June 27, 1898, in Hubbard County; Malcolm was born October 13, 1902, in Hubbard County; Louis L. was born January 8, 1906, in Hubbard County; Moirris died an infant on February 9, 1907. Mr. Vanderpoel graduated from West Mitchell Wisconsin high school in January 1875.  He graduated with honors from the University of Iowa in 1880, and graduated from the University of Iowa law school in June 1883.  He practiced law in Osage Iowa and also served as clerk of the judiciary committee of the Iowa House of Representatives.  In 1895 he moved to Park Rapids, where he practiced law, sold insurance and real  estate, and invested In land.  He was active in the Republican Party, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Knights of Pythias.  The Vanderpoels were Baptists, and in 1891 Mr. Vanderpoel was the first person baptized in Lake Itasca.  In April 1891 he celebrated fifth anniversary the founding of E. S. Frazier Post 147 of the G. A. R. by singing in a rousing patriotic quartet, according to the Enterprise.  He served as village recorder, deputy county treasurer, county auditor from January 1889 until January 1891, and county attorney from January 1887 until January 1889.  The September 21, 1882, Enterprise reported that Edith left to attend the Cedar Valley Seminary in Osage, Iowa.  On June 8, 1890, Edith became a charter member ot the First Baptist Church in Park Rapids.  In 1892 he spent $200.00 on improvements to his house in Park Rapids.  He directed the village band after May, 1895.  On June 10, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated the Vanderpoels 144th in Park Rapids.  Living with the family was Frank Shepard, 32, another real estate agent.  In January 1900 Mr. Vanderpoel could be reached by phone at his real estate agency with Mr. Shepard by asking the operator for "65," or at home by asking for "78." He was postmaster in Park Rapids from 1897 until at least 1907.  In 1920 Edith owned land in section six of Hubbard Township.  Edith died October 11, 1821. VANDEWATER M. W. Vandewater sang in the chorus of "Sleeping for the Flag" with Joe Blood and Gertrude Rossman, and in a quartet of patriotic songs with Joe Blood, Robert Dunn, and F. A. Vanderpoel in April 1891 to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the founding of the post in 1886.  The Vandewaters were not enumerated in the county in 1885 or 1895, so they may have been only temporary residents. VOGTMAN  Edward Vogtman owned land in section 1 1 of Hubbard Township in the 1920's. George Vogtman did the high carpentry work on the Hubbard grain elevator in the 1880's.  George owned land in section 16 of Hubbard Township in the 1920's. Herman Vogtman married Valma Manlove, a daughter of Howard Manlove. John Vogtman, senior, was born in May 1843 in Prussia.  His wife, Catherine, was born in 1848 in New York.  Her parents were born in France.  Children: George A. was born in 1866(?) in Minnesota-, Anna C. was born in 1868 in Minnesota; John H. was born in 1869 in Minnesota; Margaret E. was born in 1871 in Minnesota; Lewis P. was born in 1873 or 1874 in Minnesota; Carl Edward was born in 1876 in Minnesota; Alice A. was a twin born 1878 in Minnesota; Annie A. (Allie?) was a twin  born in 1878 in Minnesota; Julia was born in 1878 in Minnesota; William was born in April 1880 in Minnesota; Walter was born in 1882 or 1883 in Hubbard County; Frank was born in 1886 in Hubbard County; Daniel was born in 1878 in Hubbard County; Everett was born May 9, 1892, in Hubbard County. John Vogtman, senior, was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in 1857.  He enlisted in Company E of the lst Minnesota Cavalry Regiment November 3, 1862, and was discharged November 24, 1863, as a private.  John moved to Hubbard Township in 1880.  On June 30, 1880, William Denley enumerated the Vogtmans In township 139/140 of Cass County.  In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated them in house 60 in Hubbard.  In 1890 M. M. Loring enumerated John, a deaf veteran, in house 25 in Hubbard, On June 13, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated the Vogtmans first in Hubbard Page 140 Township.  John died November 19, 1909.  In the 1920s Catherine Vogtman owned land in sections nine and 16 of Hubbard Township. John H. Vogtman, a son of John (1843-1909) and Caterina, was born in 1868 in Minnesota.  On June 13, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated him second in Hubbard Township.  He may have been living in an small cabin on his father's farm, as Mr. Hinds did not include any details but his age and birthplace in Minnesota. Lewis Vogtman was born in 1873 or 1874 in Minnesota.  He married Dora Beardsley.  Louie farmed in Hubbard Township since 1880.  He owned land in section nine of Hubbard Township in the 1920's.  In 1930 he and Dora built a girls camp across the road from Phil Verburgghen's boys camp on Long Lake.  Barbara Rogers was one of their camp teachers.  Later Louie built "Lady of the Lake" Resort on Long Lake. William Vogtman owned land in section 1 1 of Hubbard Township in the 1920's. VOKES George G. Vokes was born in 1861 in Iowa.  His father was born abroad.  His wife', Josephine M., was born in 1869 in Wisconsin.  Her parents were born abroad.  Children: Dell was born in 1887 in Minnesota; Henry was born in 1891 in Minnesota.  George was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in July, 1886, and to Crow Wing Township in October, 1887.  On June 6, 1895, J. C. Bullock enumerated them 19th in Crow Wing Township. Wallace Vokes was born in 1876 in Iowa.  His brother , Walter, was born in Iowa in 1873.  Only their father was born outside the United States.  In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated Wallace in the household of Daniel Buckhacker, perhaps his step father, 36th in Hubbard.  In the 1920s Wallace and Walter Vokes owned land in section 36 of Henrietta Township. Walter Vokes was born in 1873 in Iowa.  His brother , Wallace, was born in Iowa in 1876.  Only their father was born outside the United States.  Walter was a farmer who moved to Minnesota in September, 1883, and to the Henrieffa Enumeration District in the spring of 1892.  In May 1885 Nelson Bement enumerated Walter in the household of Daniel Buckhacker, perhaps his step father, 36th in Hubbard.  On June 6, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated the Vokes family seventh in Henrietta Township.  In the 1920s Wallace and Walter Vokes owned land in section 36 of Henrietta Township.
