Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by:   The Palmers and Palmer Lake. The first settlers arrived on First Shell Prairie in the unorganized county of Cass in the spring of 1879. When David Palmer arrived is not known but he and his wife Annie were counted in the 1880 census of Cass County for Townships 139 Ranges, 33,34 and 35 and Townships 140 Ranges 34 and 35, the area which became the nucleus of Hubbard County. David Palmer was born in 1818 in Rhode Island. His parents were also born in Rhode island. His wife Annie, was born in 1832 in Ohio and her parents were born in New York. They were not in the 1885 census. In 1883 he advertised that he was "proving up" on his homestead.   PALMER, David, Hubbard Co. S 1/2 N W 1/4 and Lot 1 Sec.32 T.139 R.33 Witnesses: Rudolph J. Rex, Miner A. Webster, Nelson Gochia, and Martin S. Wagner, all of Shell City, Wadena, County, Minn. Enterprise, March 29, 1883. Apparently the Palmers did not live here long.
