OBITUARIES-- Surnames J thru L JENNINGS On Tuesday morning. Morris, son of Charles M. and Mary Jennings, aged five months. The little baby boy had been sick for some weeks, and had suffered much pain. The funeral took place at the family home Wednesday afternoon, Rev. W. M. Pickard conducting the services. To the sorrowing parents the sympathy of all is extended. Enterprise, November 22, 1889. JOHANNING RESIDENT OF COUNTY SINCE 1889 PASSES Mrs., Carl Johanning Of This City Suffers Stroke, Funeral Services Held Tuesday Mrs. Carl Johanning, another of the real pioneers of the county, died Saturday evening at 6:50 o'clock at her home in this city, death following a stroke which she had suffered a week previously. She had been a sufferer from diabetes for several years. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at St. John's Lutheran church, Rev. C. J. Nissen officiating. The church was filled with friends and neighbors who had known this lady who had lived among them for almost half a century. The wealth of floral offerings also testified to the esteem in which she was held. The pallbearers were Ed. Rutherford, Frank Rutherford and Murdock Stuart of Hubbard and Harve Wright, Jesse Bemis and J. Harapat of this city. Burial was made at the Hubbard cemetery under the direction of H. O. Folkstead, local undertaker. Mary Vollman was born March 4, 1866 in Germany and came to America in March 1866 settling with her parents in Hubbard County in Hubbard Township. On March 24, 1889 she was united in marriage to Carl Johanning in Hubbard. Five children were born to this union, two dying in infancy. The family lived at the farm home, five miles east of Hubbard which they developed into one of the best farms in that vicinity. The Johannings were ever noted for their genuine hospitality, Mrs. Johanning being of a very companionable nature was ever the life of the party. In her home life she was a most devoted wife and mother. In religion she was a Lutheran. Nine years ago their children having grown and married, Mr. and Mrs. Johanning retired from active farming and moved to Park Rapids buying a comfortable home on the east side. For several years Mrs. Johanning had been afflicted with diabetes but always maintained a cheerful spirit, looking at the bright of life. Surviving are the heart broken husband and companion of forty five years, two sons William and Max both of Hubbard and one daughter, Mrs. Julius Sitz (Louise) of Henrietta township. There are also nine grandchildren. Sincerest sympathy is extended to the family. Newspaper Clipping. Name of Publication and Date Unknown. Jan. 5, 1935 ? JOHNSON Roger E. Johnson, 72, a long time Park Rapids area resident, died Saturday, March 23, 1996 at the Heritage Living Center. He was born Aug. 23, 1923 in Straight River Township to John B. and H. Maye (Sutton) Johnson. He attended the District 6 country school through the 8th grade and then attended the Park Rapids Public High School, graduating in 1942. He farmed with his father. On March 24, 1945 he married Donna Wickstrom in Park Rapids. They had a dairy farm until 1962, when they sold the farm and moved into Park Rapids. He started a construction company, building homes, garages, cabins and commercial buildings in the Park Rapids area. He retired in 1992. He was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Park Rapids, held numerous offices on the church council and served as church chairman, sang in the church choir for 23 years, and served as the Straight River Township clerk for many years. He is survived by his wife; two children, Rick (Audrey) of Walnut Creek, CA and Karen (Chuck) Boyer of Frazee; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and many other relatives. Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother. Robert; and one sister, Jessie Conklin. Visitation will be held today (Wednesday) at the church from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Funeral services will be held to‚day (Wednesday) at 1 p.m. at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Park Rapids with Rev. Donald Fondow and Rev. James Neubauer officiating. The organist will be Joan Hensel and the congregational hymns will be "Just As I Am," "How Great Thou Art," " Beautiful Savior" and "Children Of The Heavenly Father." Honorary casket bearers will be Kristine Spadgenske, Kimberly, Scott and Aaron Boyer, Alicia Johnson, Michael Sadler and Debra Yliniemi Ahlin. Active casket bearers will be Mac McDowell Sr., George Toops, Ken Baumgartner, Norman Tobias, Arvid Carlson and Bob Wagner. Internment will be in the Green wood Cemetery. Spencer, died at her son's home at an advanced age. The funeral occurred Monday, Rev. Wm. Carter conducting the services. Enterprise, April 29, 1887. KENNEDY Mrs. Walling received the sad news by Tuesday evenings mail, of the sudden death of her brother, Frank P. Kennedy at Corry Penn. last Saturday. It will be remembered Mr. Kennedy spent part of last winter here. Enterprise, November 23, 1888. KIRSCHMAN Larry Lyle Kirschman , 41, of Verndale, formerly of Menahga, died Sunday, July 27, 1997 on Potato Lake near Park Rapids. He was born June 18, 1956 in Brainerd to Wayne Kirschman and June (Hanson) Kirschman. He attended school in Menahga. From 1975 to 1980 he worked with the Minnesota Forester Service, from 1980 to 1982 he worked for Gopher Evergreen planting and cutting Christmas trees, from 1983 to 1987 he owned and operated Jestalo Forestry Management Co. in Menahga and from 1987 to 1997 he was employed by Burke1Turkey Farms, Inc., for sometime managing the Verndale farm and also working at the Menahga farms. He was united in marriage July 12, 1975 to Lola Sorenson in Menahga. He is survived by one daughter, Tanya Kirschman of Mankato; one son, Jesse Kirschman of Verndale, one brother,. Gary (Gabby) Kirschman of Nevis; two uncles, one aunt and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents. Park Rapids Enterprise, August 6, 1997 KRUFT Herbert Francis Kruft, 91, of Park Rapids died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998 at the Heritage Living Center in Park Rapids. He was born Aug.21, 1906 in Henrietta Township to Frank and Rosena (Hartman) Kruft. He attended the Henrietta Country School through the eighth grade, before moving to Park Rapids, where he attended high school. He was united in marriage March 17, 1942 to Lyona Branham. They farmed in Hubbard until his retirement in 1976, when they sold the farm and moved into Park Rapids. He was a member of the First English Lutheran Church in Dorset and served at a church elder, Farmer's Union, an officer of the Farmers co operation Board in Park Rapids and for many years a supported and leader of the Stoney Lake Beavers 4H Club. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Jim ( Marva ) of Fargo and Bob of Fergus Falls; one brother, Edwin of Park Rapids; two sisters, Ida Stenevik of Park Rapids and Bertha Miller of Sacramento, CA; five grandchildren, one great granddaughter and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Clarence, four sisters, Minnie Rutherford, Madhaline Hagen , Laura Connor and Margaret Myers, and two grandsons, Kevin and Jimmy'. Visitation: Sunday, Jan 4 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Jones Pearson Funeral Home and on Monday from 1 2 p.m. at the church. Park Rapids Enterprise, Jan.3, 1998 LANGGUTH Blanche Irene Langguth, 84, of Park Rapids, died Monday, March 4, 1996 at the Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga. She was born June 1, 1911 on the Ponsford Prairie to Bryce and Mabel (Witter) Stephens. She grew up and attended school on the Ponsford Prairie. She worked as a waitress and a housekeeper at the Park Hotel in Park Rapids. On Jan. 11, 1938 she married Ralph E. Langguth in Park Rapids. In August of 1995, due to failing health, she moved to Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga. She was active in the community, held numerous offices in the Park Rapids Eagles Auxiliary Aerie 870, where she had served as a past President, a member of the Otto Hendrickson American Legion Post Auxiliary 212 and a long time member of the Riverside United Methodist Church in Park Rapids, She is survived by two daughters, Janet Scott of Park Rapids and Judy (Dan) Del Giudice of Wheeling, IL; three sisters, Harriet Enfield of Osage, Hazel West of Menahga and Delores (Victor) Molander of Vancouver, WA; one brother, Harold (Helen) of Vancouver, WA; three grandchildren; two great granddaughters; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents; her parents; her husband; one daughter, Mae, and three brothers, Robert, Bill and Dutch. Funeral services were held Fri‚day, March 8, 1996 at 11 a.m. at the Riverside Methodist Church in Park Rapids with Rev. Kathy Arnold and Rev. John Burroughs officiating. The organist was Linda Szuszitzky and the soloist was Annette Haas who sang "Thank You," "On Eagles Wings" and "The Old Rugged Cross." The congregational hymn was "Amazing Grace." Honorary casket bearers were Addie Larson, Florence DeLaney, Gerry Rezac, Ethel Johnson, Elsie Jones and Iva Rider. Active casket bearers were; Dan Del Giudice, Chad Scott, Dick Carpenter, Steve West, LaVere "Doc" James, Robert Mack and Murray Roberts. Interment was in the Greenwood Cemetery in Park Rapids. Arrangements were handled by Jones ‚Pearson Funeral Home of Park Rapids. Park Rapids Enterprise, March 9, 1996. LARSON Mrs. Charlotte Larson was born in Sweden June 12th, 1831. She came to Illinois in the year of 1860 where she lived for 16 years, after which she moved to southern Minnesota where she lived for 20 years; from there she cane to Hubbard and made her home here until she died April 12, 1913. By her marriage nine children were born, and there are six now living. Mrs. Larson was a good kind loving mother. There is now an empty chair a vacant place, that she blessed with her presence, and no one no one else can fill her place. With the children who are left the friends and neighbors mourn her loss Hubbard will miss her, but she will always be remembered for her quiet, peaceful life. The real beginning of Mrs. Larson's life and labor of love began when she was thirteen years old. At this age she became a member of the Bride of Christ in the Lutheran Church. She lived and died in the Holy Faith, in the secret place of the Most High. The funeral service was conducted by Pastor Kingan at her home in Hubbard Monday April 14th 1913 at 2:00 p.m. She was laid to rest in the Hubbard cemetery. LELAND Funeral services were held Thursday, May 12, for Mrs. Cora Leland, 90, Corvallis Ore., a former Hubbard resident, who died Saturday, May 7. Cora Emily Maguire was born October 3, 1869, at Jackson, Michigan, the daughter of Emeline and Dariaus Maguire. She attended school at Jackson, Mich. and Verndale, Minn. She was married December 25, 1889, to Albert H. Leland. Two daughters were born to the union. She moved to Oregon in 1922. She cooked for fraternities and sororities on the Oregon State Campus for 25 years. Mrs. Leland leaves two daughters,, Mrs. Viva E. White, San Diego, Calif. and Mrs. Flossie M. Bunn, Corvallis, Ore.; three grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren; a brother, Wilbur Maguire, Park Rapids, and a sister, Ina Maguire, Park Rapids; a nephew, Clinton Manlove, Hubbard, and two nieces, Mrs. Harry Avenson and Mrs. Walter Widdifield, Park Rapids. Services were held at two o'clock at the Frazey Funeral Home with Rev. Martin Eastman officiating. Interment was in the Hubbard cemetery. Paul bearers were Richard, Winston and Paul Manlove and Marlyn, Loren and Merle Avenson. Attending the services from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Maguire, Omaha, Neb. Frazey Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Enterprise, May 10, 1960. LELAND Mrs., L. L. Leland, wife of A. S. Leland of First Prairie at her home Thursday, October 3, 1889. The funeral services will be held at the schoolhouse at Hubbard, Saturday, Oct. 5th, at 1 o'clock p.m. Rev. Hamilton conducting the services. Miss L. L. Manlove was born in Schuyler county, Ill. in 1841, and removed to Grant county Wis. With her husband and family she came to the Shell Prairies 5 years ago. She suffered from cancer for over a year, and at last succumbed to the dread disease. She leaves her husband, four children and a wide circle of friends and relatives to mourn her loss. Mrs. Leland was a kind and affectionate wife and mother, and died in the full assurance of the Christian's faith, having been a member of the Methodist church for many years. Mr. Leland and family have the sympathy of many friends in their bereavement. Enterprise, October 4, 1889. LEWIS Mrs. Hattie Lewis, wife of Schuyler Lewis, of Shell City, died last Saturday at her home. Mrs. Lewis had been sick with a lingering illness for several years, which finally culminated in her death. The funeral services took place Sunday. Rev. H. C. McKnight holding the services. She leaves two children, the oldest about five years old the other an infant, and a husband to mourn her loss. Enterprise, Aug. 10, 1883 LINDQUIST Rex Steward Lindquist, 82, of Peoria, AZ died there Tuesday, Feb.25, 1997. He was born Aug.11, 1914 in Park Rapids to Ira and Christine Lindquist. He graduated from Park Rapids with the Class of 1932. He attended Concordia College and Northwestern Bible Institute and Seminary, where he received his degree in theology in 1936. He received an Honorary Master of Theology in 1956. He was united in marriage Sept. 23, 1936 to Fern in Duluth He served the pulpit in two United Brethren Churches in London and Glenvilie, MN. From 1937 44 he was the Pastor at Grace Baptist Church in Omaha and also was director of Youth for Christ as well as a teacher at the Omaha Bible institute. he was Pastor of the Church of the Open Door in Denver. He was director of Youth for Christ as well as vice president of the Rocky Mountain Area YFC . He founded the Rocky Mountain Bible Institute and was its president. In 1956 he founded and pastored the Chapel By The Sea located at Cook Inlet near Anchor‚age, AK. In 1969 more than 30,000 visitors came to see the rustic log chapel and the picturesque grounds. He began distributing books and Bibles from his study which grew into the Alaska Bible Supply in downtown Anchorage. In 1969 they moved Salinas, CA where he purchased the Western Bible Store. He also served as Interim Pastor for several churches in the area, as well as in Hawaii. He also taught at the Prakash institute in India. In 1993 they moved to Peoria, AZ where he served as chairman of the Missions Committee at the Grace Bible Church. He Is survived by his wife and one daughter, Rexine Reeves of Nevada. Memorial Services: Monday, March 3 at the race Bible Church in Sun City, AZ; Saturday, March 8 at the Seaside First Baptist Church, CA; and Saturday, March 15 at the Chapel By The Sea in Anchorage. Park Rapids Enterprise, March 5, 1997. LOCKE Feb. 26, 1891 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. M. C. Jay, L. H. Locke, aged 69 years. L. H. Locke was born in 1822 in Cortland Co., N.Y. When 25 years old he married and at 28 moved to Ill. In 1855 he removed to Iowa. In 1872 his wife died while they were living in Mitchell Co. He soon afterward located in Jessup, Black Hawk Co. Iowa, where he made his home the most of the time since. He had five children, only two of whom are now living. A son and Mrs. Jay. In December 1889 Mr. Locke was stricken with a shock of paralysis and ever since he has been in a feeble condition. Last June he came to his daughter. Many times since he has been so low that life has been despaired of by those about him, but an unusually strong constitution aided by the best of care has enabled him to repeatedly rally. During the winter he has been out about town often. About two weeks ago he was taken worse and continued to grow feebler until he finally succumbed to death yesterday at 11:30 a.m. Mr. Locke was a member for many years standing of the order and held a card from Perry Lodge No. 158 I.O.O.F. Jessup, Iowa. His funeral takes place today from the Congregational church Rev. W. J. Conard officiating. Shell Prairie Lodge I.O.O.F. will attend in a body and observe the obsequies of the order over their deceased brother. Hubbard County Enterprise, February 27, 1891. LONG Dies Wednesday Morning; Funeral Services Friday At The Home At 2:00 P.M. Park Rapids and community lost another one of its respective and lovable women Wednesday morning when Mrs. Fred D. Long, wife of the Mayor of our city died at her home at the age of 55 years. Mrs. Long had been ill but two weeks, suffering from the flu which later developed into other complications. All that loving hands could do was done and at times she rallied, finally passing away early Wednesday morning. Mrs. Long was a home loving woman. Her children and her home were always first in her thoughts and to those who knew her best she was loved and admired as a good Christian woman. The Long home was always noted for its keen hospitality and every guest was treated as though it were their own home. She will be missed by her loving husband and three children who were devoted to their mother. Ellen Tighe was born on April 13, 1878 at Douro, Ontario, Canada. She spent her early childhood there with her parents. On July 25, 1900 she was united in marriage to Fred D. Long at Peterboro, Ontario. To this union four children were born, Theodore, Evelyn, Virgivia, of this city and Mildred, who died in 1922 here in Park Rapids. Mr. and Mrs. Long lived in Brainerd two years, at Hubbard one year and came to Park Rapids where they made their home in 1903. She was a member of the Episcopal Church, attending the local church in our city. She is survived by her devoted husband, F. D. Long, three children, one son, Theodore, and Two daughters, Evelyn and Virginia, two sisters, Mrs. Harry Elliot, Carvon, Alberta, Mrs. Geo. Brooks, Calgary, Alberta and two brothers Stuart Tighe of Didsburg, Alberta and Chas. Tighe of Vancouver, British Columbia, besides several nieces and nephews. The funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at the home at 3:00 P M with Rev. Robert G. Long, pastor of the Trinity Episcopal Church of this city officiating. Internment will be made in Greenwood cemetery beside the body of her daughter, Mildred. Those from away attending the funeral were her sisters Mrs. Geo Brooks of Calgary, Alberta; Mrs. Harry Elliot of Carvon, Alberta; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Martyn and son of Springfield, Illinois, a nephew of Mr. Long; Hugh and Walter Tighe of Minneapolis, cousins of Mrs. Long and Mrs., Syd Martyn of Crookston, Minnesota. LORD Edward Ace Lord, 65, was born in Park Rapids on Aug. 30,1921 and died Oct. 18, 1986 in Washington D.C. from a massive heart attack while on an extensive trip with his wife Grace. They had been married 47 years. He had lived in Seattle, WA. for the past 45 years and was a member of Seattle Masonic Lodge 275. Survivors Include his wife, Grace; two daughters, Rita Welcome and Joanne Lord, four grandchildren, Mark Mitchell, Lisa and Jennifer Helina and Eric Baker; three brothers, Charles of Park Rapids; Robert of Minneapolis and Donald of Coon Rapids and one sister, Alice Jenkins of Hill City. A memorial service will be held in Seattle, WA. Enterprise, October 1986. LORD Donald Ray Lord, 71, of Wadena, formerly of Coon Rapids died Monday, Jan.26, 1998 at the University Hospital in Minneapolis. He was born April 3, 1926 in Park Rapids to Leonard and Geneva (Tennis) Lord. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1947. He was united in marriage May 8, 1948 to Bernice Mattson in New York Mills. He worked for the Park Department in Coon Rapids for 25 years. In 1991, he retired and moved to Wadena. He was a life member of VFW Post 3922 and American Legion Post 456 of Sebeka. He is survived by his wife; one brother, Charles (Donna) of Park Rapids; and one sister, Alice (Moris) Jenkins of Hill City. He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers, Robert, Wilton and Edward. Park Rapids Enterprise, Feb. 4, 1998
