FileFormat by Terri--MNArchives Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: Ann McClary Submitted: December 2004 ========================================================================= October 13, 1937 Park Rapids Enterprise County's Oldest Pioneer Called Services for Math Mickel of Nevis Held at Akeley Math Mickel, aged 80 former resident of Nevis, died Wednesday October 13, at his home in Park Rapids. The cause of death was heart trouble and complications of old age. Born December 9, 1856 in Hoffweiler, Germany, deceased sailed from that country at the age of eighteen coming to the United States. He located with his mother, two brothers and a sister at Hastings, Minn., where he lived a year. Later he came to Hubbard county where he was one of the oldest settlers, having farmed in this community for 67 years. Mr. Mickel was thrice married, his first two wives preceding him in death. To his union with Elizabeth Shetlen, his first wife, a son was born, who died at the age of six years. Later he married Bertha Curthulse of Wadena. nine children were born to the union. They are: Edward of Seattle, Wash., Charles, Cashmere, Wash.; Arnold, Grand Rapids, Minn.; Mathew, LaCrosse, Wis.; Bernhard, Max and Theodore whose addresses are unknown; Mrs. E. L. Samstad (Minnie) Minneapolis and Mrs. Clarence Smith (Susan) of Hibbing. Deceased is survived by these nine children, his widow Josephine and two children of the third union: Mrs. John Resch (Dorothy) of Walker, Margaret, who is at home and a step- daughter, Mrs. A. E. Ellingson (Florence) of Fargo. A brother Mike Mickel of Browerville and fourteen grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 9:30 o'clock at St. John's Catholic church at Akeley, Rev. James F. Flynn officiating. Pall bearers were August Lindow, August Erickson, Gust Hensel, Mike McCoy, Peter Kavanaugh and Albert Thompton. Burial took place at the Henrietta cemetery. Relatives in attendance at the services from out of town were Mike Mickel and son Charles and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brown of Browerville, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Smith of Hibbing, Mrs. E. L. Samstad and son, Minneapolis, Mr. and Mrs. John Resch, Walker, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Mickel, Grand Rapids and Mrs. A. E. Ellingson, Fargo. Distant relatives in attendance were Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Hofforth, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Arnold, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Schmitknecht, Mr. and mrs. Louie Hofforth, Mr. and Mrs. August Hofforth, Mrs. Frank Hofforth and Anton. Hofforth all of Long Prairie. R. Rowdin Minneapolis, Mrs. Oliver Dahl and Miss Ester Conzet of Pine River.
