Submitted by Joretta Mohns--Historian for the First Presbyterian Church of Round Lake, Jackson Co., MN. The Norwegian Lutheran Church This church. was organized in May, 1891 when a Petition signed by 40 persons asked Rev. S. Anderson to organize a church. He held services in the western Round Lake township area for several Sundays, and the church was formally organized. Mr. E. M. White was the manager for the new church. The church was built on the southeast corner of section 22 of Round Lake township. -picture of the church- The early families of this church included the Olsons, Hansons, Remmingsons, Viks, Knutsons, Pettersons, Kevlons, Aushams, Handelands, and the Larsons. In the year 1921, Rev. Sonnock tried to reorganize the church which for several years had been at a standstill, but the church closed its doors in l922. The pews were sold to the Presbyterian Church, the lumber from the church was used to build the Cecil Johnson home in Round Lake, and it is thought the bell is now in the St.. Matthews Church tower in Worthington, but that is not confirmed. The Ladies Aid was organized in 1891 and the first minutes were written in Norwegian.. The early members were: Mrs. A.P. Petterson, Mrs. K. Olson, Mrs. B. Hemmingson, Mrs. L. Vik, Mrs. Llaattewick, Mrs. K. Vik, Mrs. K. Knutson, Mrs. Erebran, Mrs. L. Karlson, Mrs. C. Kevlon., Mrs. B. Ausham, Mrs. W. Johnson, Mrs. P. O. Williamson, Mrs. Lauck, Mrs. Vedwick, Mrs. D. Johnson, Mrs. O. Handeland, Mrs. E. C. Larson and Mrs. E. L. Larson. In 1933, the name of the Ladies’ Aid was changed to the Golden Rule Aid and still meets once a month. See the Organization chapter for present information. A cemetery was founded in December, 1891, when Hans and Gestine Hanson of Whitman Co., Washington sold to the Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Society one square acre in section 24 for $1. Two of their children had been buried at this site earlier, and the Hanson's must have wanted the site preserved now that they had moved from the area. This cemetery has been largely desecrated and vandalized over the many years since it closed. The land was used as a pasture for many years, and the animals knocked over many of the stones. A fence was later put around the grounds, paid for by descendants of the families buried there. But teenagers found the site and nearly destroyed all the remaining markers. In 1979 there were 12 stones left and in 1980 only 10. After searching township and county records the following cemetery list has been reconstructed: AUSHAM, Ole: l844-1907 A large pine tree marks the grave.
