Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: djjdowns Willmar Tribune January 1910 James Downs Obituary: James Downs, one of the early settlers of Green Lake, died at his home Monday afternoon after a long and lingering illness. In May he suffered a stroke of paralysis which robbed him of his speech and also paralyzed parts of his body, so he was practically helpless, and death came as a great relief. His funeral will be held Friday morning, services being conducted at 9:30 at the home and 10:30 at St. Patrick's Church in Kandiyohi. The services will be in charge of Fr. C. McDevitt assisted by Rev. Fr. Carlin of Tracy and Rev. Fr. Malloy of Shieldsville. James Downs was born near Innis, County Clare, Ireland, about 83 years ago. He came to this country 61 years ago, and in 1868 came to this county, where he settled on a homestead in Section 28 making his residence there ever since. He is survived by his wife Catherine Murray Downs, four daughters; Mrs. Maggie Casey of Darwin, Mrs. Mary Carlin of Green Lake, Mrs. Nellie McNulty of Donnybrook, North Dakota, and Mrs. Katie Caroline of Kenmare, North Dakota, and one son, attorney John Martin Downs of Minneapolis. **also** Monday afternoon James Downs, one of the pioneer settlers of the town of Green Lake, died, after an illness lasting since last May, when he received a stroke of paralysis. The funeral was held yesterday morning at St. Patrick's Church at Kandiyohi, and was very largely attended. The service were conducted by Rev. Father McDevitt of this city and Rev.Father George Carlin of Tracey. James Downs was born in County Clare, Ireland 85 years ago. He had resided in the United States 61 years, 40 of which were spent on in the town of Green Lake, this county. He is survived by a wife, one son J. M. Downs, of Minneapolis, and four daughters. Mrs. Mary Carlin of Green Lake. Mrs. Katie Caroline of Kenmare, N.D., Mrs. Maggie Casey of Darwin, Minn., and Mrs. Nellie McNulty of Donnybrook, N.D.
