No organized settlement began until May 1856 with the coming of a large number of Welsh from Jackson County, Ohio. They chose this area for its rich soil and abundance of timber. This Welsh group became known as the "Coed Mawr" or Big Woods settlement by the larger Welsh group in Blue Earth County. In 1857 the Welsh errected the Saron log church, located three miles east of here. It was the first church bulit in the county and the first Welsh church in the state. In 1860 the Elim church was built here and the churchyard became the burial ground for many early pioneers.
