Mr. Derby had gone out of the house and returned to the sitting room when in the act of using a poker in the stove he fell back upon the floor before his son Freeman could reach him. Freeman raised him up hurriedly and tried to restore life but after a few gasps the spirit departed. It is believed that death resulted from heart failure. The deceased was 80 years old on the 14th of September, and had been feeble for many years. Mr. Derby was born in Holley Mass., but had spent most of his mature life in Ohio. He removed with his family to Le Sueur in 1871. He had served as a soldier during the rebellion in the 68th Ohio infantry, and he had labored under disabilities received while in that service. He was a man of more than ordinary intelligence, and a quiet, respected citizen. He had been a member of the Masonic order for many years, and he held the office of Justice of the Peace here for one term about 15 years ago. Mr. Derby was the father of 13 children, seven of whom are living, and four of whom attended the funeral, which took place from his late residence at 2 P.M. on Saturday. Rev. E.K. Lewis conducted the services. The members of the family still living are an aged wife (73 years old), five sons: Louis North Platte Nebraska; Joseph E., Chicago Ill.; Freeman, in Le Suer, who has devotedly cared for his parents the past ten years; geo Q., of New Auburn, Sibley county; Edward, in Goodland Kansas; and two daughters, Mrs. W. C. Russell. Toledo Ohio and Mrs. Robert Iten, Fargo North Dakota.
