FileFormatted by Terri--MNArchives Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: Jade Haken September 2004 ========================================================================= JOHN HOSS EARLY PIONEER RECEIVES CALL Came to Mahomen county in 1905; Veteran of Prussian War of 1870 - 1871 John Hoss, one of the earliest settlers of Mahnomen county before it was organized as a county, passed away at his farm home in Pembina township on Sunday, May 17, at the age of 85 years, 10 months, and 24 days. Mr. Hoss had been in good health up until about a week before his death, when he suffered a heart attack, which forced him to bed for the last two days. Funeral services were held on Wednesday at 9 o'clock from St. Michael's church, with Rev. Fr. Hyaclinth officiating. Pallbearers were Frank Obermiller, John K. Rumreich, Fred Cloutier, Matt Tupa, Matt Chioupek and Louis Novak. He was interred in the Catholic cemetery. John Hoss was born in Germany, June 22, 1850. His marriage to Miss Susie Laush occurred there in 1880. They came to the United States in 1893 and settled on a farm in Perham, Minn. His wife passed away here in 1896, leaving her husband and two sons, Joe and Tom. In 1898 he was married to Miss Emma Seipel, at Perham, and to this union, eight children were born, namely, Mrs. Nick Miller (Annie), Mahnomen; Mrs. Pete Blaeser (Josie), Mahnomen; Gustie, at home; John Hoss Jr., Fosston, Leo, Merrill, Wis.; Ben, Frank and Milo at home, all of whom survive him. In the spring of 1905, they moved to Mahomen county in Popple Grove township. They resided here until 1917, at which time they came to Pembina township, where they have since resided, and where his death occurred. Mr. Hoss was an old war veteran, having served in the Prussian War between France and Germany in 1870 - 1871. Out-of-town relatives here for the funeral were Joe of Fertile; Mr. and Mrs. Tom Hoss and a nephew, Nick Hoss, of Minneapolis, and Mr. and Mrs. John Hoss Jr., of Fosston. The survivors have the sympathy of the entire community in the loss of their loved one. His body was interred 20 May 1936 Mahnomen, Mahnomen Co., MN, St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery.
