Higgs higgs.layne@yahoo.com July 13, 2021, 4:39 pm The News Messenger - Marshall, Lyon County, Minn James Butson, son of English parentage was born in Wisconsin in 1847, and died at his home in Marshall, March 12, 1913, being sixty years old. Forty three years ago, he married Miss Hannah Lee, and in 1872, the young pair elected to build a new nest in Minnesota. They chose a claim near Marshall, though this city consisted of one tent, which was used as railway supply camp. Their first domicile was a tent also. Later they bought slabs from a distance to erect a shanty. In time this rude shelter was replaced for a comfortable farm home. During these years, God blessed them with both children and prosperity. Fourteen years ago, they left the farm and came to reside in Marshall. Here he was suddenly stricken and a short illness passed away. James Butson was a Lyon County pioneer. He held a notable place among those swiftly passing veterans of fortune who forty years ago, shared the rigors and dangers of the Northwest to win for themselves a worthy place, and for their posterity an imperishable blessing with their loyal ones wives, they conquered and domesticated the prarie. Genial, hard working, honest, James Butson, like all his kind, deserves to leave his name brightly written in the annuals of Lyon County. He was a home builder, a good citizen, and a kindly neighbor. He leaves to mourn his loss, besides a host of friends, his good wife, and three children, Mrs H.Champlain, and John Butson, of this city, and Harry Butson, now at Currie, Minnesota.
