She would have been 96 years old, June 28. Until recently, Mrs. Phillips had been in wonderful health for a person of her years, assisting with the housework daily and as active and keenly interested in life as a person of half her age. Death came from the natural dissolution that occurs when the body wears out. Sarah Bunker was born at Bolton, Quebec, June 28, 1832. As a child she moved to Vermont where she was married to Raymond Bennett. They were the parents of three children. Mr. Bennett died about 1860. With her parents and the H. H. Clemons and Ephriam Clemons families she came to Minneapolis in 1864. The journey was made by rail to Owatonna, which was then the end of the railroad. The rest of the journey to Shelbyville, Blue Earth county, was made by ox team. At Shelbyville, once an historic settlement in this part of the state, now only a memory, she was married Jan. 13, 1870, to James Phillips. They had two sons, Oscar of Truman and John of Minneapolis. There is also a stepdaughter, Mrs. Shoutes of Amboy, who gave the aged woman a daughter's tender care in her last illness. The funeral will be held at the Church of Christ, Truman, Thursday. ========================================================================= Copyright Lois Eckley 2006.
