Author: See Below JOHN MARTIN, an intelligent, thrifty and enterprising farmer, residing on section 5, Harvey township, was born in County Cavan, Ireland, in May, 1824. His parents, who were Hugh and Elizabeth Martin, were natives of the same county. The father died in Ireland in 1830. The mother came to the United States in 1851, and lived in Pennsylvania until the time of her death, in 1876. John Martin, the subject of our sketch, grew to manhood in his native land, acquiring the same habits of enterprise, industry and frugality which are so characteristic of his race. In 1848 he left Ireland and came to the United States, landing at New York city on the 23d of May, and two days later he went to Bucks county, Pa., where he remained for four years. At the expiration of that time he went to Schuylkill county, Pa., and remained there from the year 1852 until 1877. While in that State he was employed in mining coal for twenty-seven years. In 1877 he came to Meeker county, Minn., and located on a farm on section 5, in Harvey township, where he has since lived. Since his residence here he has been engaged in farming and stock-raising, and now has a valuable farm of 160 acres, a good share of which is under cultivation. Mr. Martin was married on the 25th of July, 1852, to Mary Farrelly, and their marriage has been blessed with the following-named children: Ellen, born August 22, 1853, died January 25, 1855; Hugh, born October 31, 1855, died October 12, 1857; Joseph, born September 28, 1857; Bridget and Lizzie, born November 17, 1859; John, born November 3, 1861; Mary, born September 18, 1863, died December 17, 1863; Thomas, born January 30,1870, died same day. Mrs. Martin’s, parents were both natives of Ireland, where they lived until the time of their death. Mr. and Mrs. Martin are both active and exemplary members of the Catholic Church. In political matters Mr. Martin affiliates with the democratic party.
