MN - Feb. 6, 1973 Minneapolis, Hennepin, MN Carl Peter was the fourth child of Annie R. Peterson and Hans Peter Olson. He was born and raised in the Greenleaf Township of Meeker Co. Minnesota. He had six sisters and six brothers. His father was from the N. Gudbrandsdalen Valley of Noway, the Sel Komme. His mother was raised in a sod hut during the Indian War's of the mid 1800's in Minnesota. Carl was raised in that same Township of Greenleaf. We have been able to follow his life through the years through the US Census. At age 21, he is no longer with the family. I think he probably found work at the Litchfield Creamery. The Creamery was established in Litchfield Township, Meeker Co. in 1885. It became famous during the 1920's for making the delicious "Land O' Lakes" Butter! In 1917, Carl fills out a WWI Draft Registration card. We learn of his birthdate, June 2, 1889, and that he was born in Greenleaf, MN. He is a buttermaker at the Litchfield Creamery and is married and has one child. His physical description is short, medium build, blue eyes and ok brown hair. He is not bald. He claims exception to the draft because he has a wife and child. It is signed and dated June 5, 1917. In the 1920 Census, Carl is still in Meeker County but is in Litchfield Village which is closer to the Creamery. His wife's name is Mattie, which is short for Mathilda. Her name is on the death certificate of daughter, Clarice. His household consists of: Carl P. age 30 head Matti G. age 27 wife Clarice E. age 3 yr 5 mos Daughter Carl S. age 1 yr 3 mos Son They rent and do not own their home. Both Carl and Matti were born in Minnesota. Both of Matti's parents come from Norway. We also learn, whoever is doing the Census answers has no idea where Annie R. was born. They answer Minnesota then it is erased and changed to Iowa! This prompted me to order Annie's death certificate for proof positive of her state of birth. Carl is still employed at the Creamery as a buttermaker in 1920. In the 1930 Census, the family has added children and moved to the Ottertail Co. Township of Clitherall. This is the unincorporated area of Battle Lake. They own this house. In 1930 the household includes: Carl age 40 Mattie age 37 Clarice age 13 Robert age 9 H. Warren age 7 Lorraine P. age 6 Maurice A. age 4 Paul age 1 This time they got Annie R's birth state correct, as Minnesota. ========================================================================= Copyright Marilyn Roberston 2007.
