Newspaper item:Peter E Hanson tells of a man who lives less than a hundred miles from Lfld, who met with quick retribution a few days ago. The man was stealing timber and had a large tree chopped down. He thought he heard somebody coming, and driving his axe--a double bitted one--into the log to see who was coming. While standing on the log, he slipped and sat down upon the sharp edge of the axe, with serious results. J H passed away Monday morning after a long illness. The funeral was held Wed from the residence of the deceased. J H was born at sea of German parents Sep 15, 1847. The ship was wrecked by a storm and the parents perished. The infant was rescued and on arrival in NY was placed in the care of a foster family, the John Harpers. They became fond of the child and adopted it as a son. The family later moved to Ohio and when the war broke out young Harper enlisted. After the war Mr H came west and located in Meeker Co. He married Jennie Rutland and the family made their home on a farm in FP until 8 yrs ago when they moved to a small farm southeast of Lfld.
