Morrison County Girl Gives
Birth to Child in Hay
Stack
Last evening the dead body of a young girl, aged about 20 years, named Frances 
Florek, whose parents reside in Morrill town, Morrison County, was found dead 
in a haystack on the Varner farm north of Foley. The girl has been dead 
several days when found. Beside the body was found an infant girl wrapped in 
an apron and alive.
The body of the girl was discovered by John Corrier, a farmer renting the 
Varner place. Last evening as he was passing the stack, he saw a hand sticking 
up and believing it to be that of a dead man reported the matter last evening 
at about 7 o’clock to Dr. Freeman and Attorney H. F. McGovern, who were 
passing by in an automobile. An examination revealed the dead form of the 
young girl and the tiny baby.
Three days ago [August 14 or 15th, Saturday or Sunday] the girl, realizing her 
condition, started for the home of a friend. But when she got as far as the 
stack strength failed her and she lay down there. Here the child was born and 
the mother died after taking the precaution to insure the life of the child.
For three days the infant went without food and it was its wailing sound that 
attracted the attention of Mr. Corrier. He first thought it to be rats but 
upon uncovering the hay found it to be a healthy and lively girl baby.
The remains of the unfortunate girl have been removed to the undertaking rooms 
of Ellingboe & Ferguson. They are badly decomposed. Miss Florek had worked in 
different families in the village for over a year and had always borne a good 
reputation. The father of the child is unknown.
