Schaefer Lake Victim Column - GEO. A. SCHAEFER LAKE VICTIM DROWNED AFTER DIVING FROM BOAT, FUNERAL HELD HERE ON TUESDAY MORNING. Pelican Lake, four and one half miles northeast of Albany, was the scene of a shocking tragedy on Saturday morning at about 8:00, when George A. Schaefer, son of Mr. And Mrs. Geo. M. Schaefer of this village was drowned. The young man, who is a cashier of the bank of Bowlus, was spending his vacation at the lake last week in company with his family. They had rowed out with a boat a little distance from the shore on Saturday morning and he wanted to go bathing. He dived off from the boat and after coming up after diving, he called for help, but before the occupants of the boat had turned the boat and reached him he sank down again and did not come up again. An expert diver from Bowlus was immediately secured who located the body near the spot where he sank down, about two hours after the tragedy. The remains were brought to Albany to the Schaefer home, where the body layed in state until Tuesday. George A. Schaefer was born at Albany 28 years ago. After graduating from the Parochial school here, he entered St. John’s University at Collegeville, attending the commercial course there. After completing his course of studies he entered as an assistant at the First State Bank of Albany, and later excepted a position as cashier of the bank of Bowlus. He was married to Miss Pauline Kowalczyk of Bowlus 6 years ago, who survives as also their three children, Jerome, Ruth, and Mark, who now mourn over the loss of a loving husband and father. Besides his wife and children and his parents he is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Thomas of Sauk Rivers; Leo of St. Cloud; Anton of West Union; Otto of Agawam, Montana; Roman of Minneapolis; Henry, Richard, Carl and Edmund of Albany; Mrs. Schoenhoff and Mrs. Borgmann of Sauk Centre; Mrs. Dr. Zeis of Albany; Sister Marcella of St. Benedicts Convent, St. Joseph; Gertrude and Margaret Schaefer of Albany. The funeral was held on Tuesday morning after a Requiem mass held at 9:30 o’clock by Rev. Father Anselm, assisted by Rev. Biealka of Bowlus and Rev. Kampmann of Sauk Rapids as deacon and subdeacon and Rev. Kitowski of St. Anna and Rev. Timothy as masters of ceremony. The remains were escorted from the Schaefer home to the church and later to the cemetery by the St. Joseph’s Society of Albany, of which the deceased was a member. Pallbearers were six cousins of the deceased: Arthur Emmel, Carl Metzroth, Lawrence Schaefer, Arthur Schaefer and Sylvester Fandel of St. Cloud and John Wartman of Watkins. Herald Schaefer a nephew of the deceased carried the cross. The large Seven Dolores church was filled with relatives and friends of the deceased during the day. That the young man was well liked and highly esteemed at Bowlus was shown by the large attendance from that place at the funeral and that all business places of Bowlus were closed on Tuesday in honor of Mr. Schaefer.
