She was the third daughter and fifth child born to Ferdinand and Albertina Stern. She was the first of their children born in the United States. Like her other siblings she grew to adulthood on the family farm in Dexter Township. She was baptized and confirmed in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. She attended parochial school. On April 21, 1909 at the age of 22, she married Roy Rolfson. Emma was attended by Elsie Stern and Francis Rolfson. Roy was attended by Herman Stern and Guy Rolfson. Roy was born on May 3, 1885 in Mower County to Asbjorn and Mary Fuller Rolfson. The Rolfson family lived in Mower County and Roy was a farmer. Emma and Roy had three sons; Harlan born in 1911; Elwin born on March 14, 1917, and Dale born in 1923. In the 1930 census they are living in Dexter Township on the farm next to Roy's brothers Guy and Earl. They later lived near Brownsdale, in Mower County. Roy died on August 4, 1972. Emma died two years later on September 24, 1974 at the age of age of 87. Marriage April 21, 1909 to Roy Rolfson at Dexter.
