He was the third son and seventh child of Ferdinand and Albertina Stern. He grew up on the Stern family farm in Mower County. He was baptized on December 18, 1892 and was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church on April 8, 1906. He served in the infantry during WWI for Company A of the 129th infantry, division 33. According to my mother, Lucille Tolstead, Art was exposed to "mustard gas" during WWI. His occupation was farming. He lived his adult years following the war in Mower County. In the 1920 Federal Census Art listed his occupation as "operator of a general farm". His younger brother Erwin was living with Art and his wife Minnie and is listed as being a partner in the farm operation. Art married Wilhemina (Minnie) Buhs on August 20, 1919 at the age of 27. Minnie was the daughter of Ottlaf and Maria Wehlers Buhs and was born in 1890. Art and Minnie never had a family. Minnie died in 1946. Art lived in Austin after retiring from farming and died at the age of 76. He is buried in the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in rural Dexter Township, near the rest of the Stern family. Robert Tolstead's memories of Art; "I knew Art Stern the best of all my mother's brothers. He was a very nice man and an avid fisherman. He loved to fish at Lake Peppin, especially in the wintertime, through the ice. After Minnie died, he lived with Art and Elsie for a number of years. He worked at Piggly-Wiggly and IGA grocery stores in Austin and managed one for some time". Mower County Transcript Republican 27 Aug 1919 Stern Arthur J.
