She was born on April 26, 1858 in Labes, Kreis (county) Regenwald, District of Koslin, Pommern, Prussia. Labes was located in the Pommern Province close to the Baltic Sea and in the area of Stettin. Her parents were August Karl and Carolina (Mundt) Sukow. She had one brother, August Sukow and two sisters, Augusta (Sukow) Strangman, and Bertha (Sukow) Neubauer, who also immigrated to the United States from Germany and lived in Mower Count, Minnesota. (little is currently known about their father August Karl Sukow ). Albertina's mother, Carolina, immigrated to the United States, and lived in Dexter Township, with her daughters. According to Lydia Stern Tolstead, Caroline was a frequent visitor in the Stern home. Lydia described Carolina as always wearing a long sleeved gray woolen dress and spending a lot of time sitting in the rocking chair rocking in her parent's home. Caroline is buried in the Lutheran Cemetery in Dexter Township. On October 19, 1877 Albertina (aged 19) married Ferdinand Stern in Wurow, Germany.
