FileFormat by Terri--MNArchives Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: Diane Rollins Submitted: February 2007 ========================================================================= Carolina Mund(t) Sukow The patriarch of the Sukow branch of the family was August Karl Sukow. The only information on August Sukow at this point in the research is his name and that he was born in Stettin,Pommern, Prussia. (Information gathered from the death certificate of his son, August,Albertina Sukow Stern's brother). The name Sukow probably is a surname based on locality. The matriarch of the Sukow branch of the family is Carolina Mund(t), who immigrated to the United States from Germany. Carolina was born on November 30, 1838 in Bredow, Pommern, Prussia. From the 1911 Edition Encyclopedia; "Bredow was a village of Germany, in the kingdom of Prussia, immediately north of Stettin, of which it forms a suburb. Here are the Vulcan Iron Works and shipbuilding yards, where the liners "Deutschland" (1900) , the "Kaiserin Augusta Victoria" (1906), and the "George Washington" (1908), the largest vessel in the German Mercantile marine were built; and also sugar, cement and other factories." The (known) children of August and Carolina Mundt Sukow are; August Sukow born on March 19, 1860, Albertina Sukow Stern born on April 26, 1858, Augusta Sukow Strangman born on May 11, 1867, and Bertha Sukow Neubauer born in February 1863. All four of the Sukow children immigrated to the United States and came to Mower County, Minnesota. At the time of the 1885 Minnesota State Census they are all living in the Village of Dexter with the households being close together. With the exception of Albertina who was already married to Ferdinand, the other siblings married their spouses after immigrating to Minnesota. (Refer to marriage notice for Augusta Sukow) Carolina lived with her children after coming to Minnesota, and presumably she was a widow by the time they came to the United States in 1885. Lydia Stern Tolstead remembered her Grandmother Sukow being a frequent visitor in their home. She evidently was usually dressed in a severe grey dress and sat in a rocking chair in their home. Following is a notice in the Mower County Transcript, also on left see copy of death card for Carolina. Her death certificate lists cerebral hemorrhage. Church records, Carolina Mund (Mutter Sukow) February 21, 1906 (funeral) February 24, 06, list her death as being from Schlag. Carolina Mund(t) Sukow died on February 18, 1906 and is buried in the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Dexter Township. She is buried close to her daughter Augusta Strangman and her husband Ferdinand. Carolina shares a granite tombstone with Wilhemina Strangman, one side of the stone has the inscription "Strangman" and the other side of the stone has the inscription "Sukow". DEXTER "Mrs. Carolina Sukow had a parametric stroke Sunday evening, Feb.18th while at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ferd Strangman. The whole side was paralyzed. She died Wednesday evening from the effects. She was 68 years of age. Funeral was held Friday afternoon." ========================================================================= Copyright Diane Rollins 2007.
