Many of banks to you in the local businessmen who cooperated in this "special" Christmas greeting. For we boys overseas I'm sure it brought back memories of home, the old gang in the 'bull' sessions that will take place and we all get back home again. Don't you think? Been away from Fulda some years before my induction, I can hardly realize that so many of the fellows who were only 'Youngsters' when I left, are now doing them themselves proud by giving their one and all to 'sock' those guys Tojo and Hitler where it hurts the most. Had my pass a while back and upon dropping in at the Red Cross and looking over the Minnesota register, I find that Dick Kunzweiler is stationed someplace close by. I hope to have the opportunity to look him up, that is if he hasn't moved by that time. Thanksgiving is passed and with it the happy memories of roast turkey, dressing and all the trimmings. In the true fashion of a G.I. chow hound I am now looking forward to assured that the turkey will catch it the Christmas dinner. You can rest again that day! I have had the opportunity to climb to the top of Mt. Vesuvius, a site and experience are will never forget. Also saw the ruins of Pompeii, and hope to see the Isle of Capri. The old saying, Join the Navy and see the world, holds good for the Army too, in this war. The local population seemed quite glad to see us and are giving us a certain amount of cooperation (they should). Most of them are a sorry lot and conditions are quite bad. Food is scarce and we know about "Black Markets'. Consumers goods, and should I say, stimulating beverages, were quite reasonable upon arrival. But it didn't take a local 'peanut vendor' long to find out he could double and triple his price and still make a sale. Army officials had to put on the pressure and everyone hopes things will be back to normal in the near future. Time and space are running short so will close for this time. Best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. As ever Frank Wisdorf PS The Free Press and Legionnaire are coming through fine. ========================================================================= Copyright Judy Clarke 2006.
