Byers - 2004 Sylvia Byers was born on July 1, 1935, in Adrian, Minnesota to Ollie and Minnie Feltman Bartholomaus. She grew up on farms in the Rushmore, Reading and Worthington areas and she attended elementary schools there. The family moved to a farm near Iona in 1950. Sylvia graduated from Slayton High School in 1953. She and Doug Byers were married in Iona Presbyterian Church on January 9, 1953. They lived in Slayton until 1962 when they moved to St. Paul, Minnesota. Sylvia managed a childrens clothing department in North St. Paul. They moved to Westbrook in 1971 where Doug and she owned and operated Westbrook LP Gas. They retired in 1986 and spent the past several winters in Texas. Sylvia passed away unexpectedly at the Westbrook Hospital on December 5, 2004, at the age of 69. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Westbrook where she served on various committees. She was always willing to volunteer and delivered Meals on Wheels, was a Hospice of Murray County volunteer, and was a longtime supporter and participant of the Relay for Life. She was a member of the Red Hat Society in Westbrook and Texas. Sylvia enjoyed embroidery, crafts, winters in Texas, and spending time with her family and friends. Survivors include her husband, Doug Byers, Westbrook, MN; four children: Steve Byers, Willmar, MN; Sheryl and Kevin Myers, Young America, MN; Sheila and Jon Knudson, Rosemount, MN and Shelly and Dennis Gieselman, Worthington, MN; eight grandchildren: Amy Hulstein, Stacy Freeland, Somer and Tera Myers, Alana and Ashley Knudson, and Kahla and Jordan Gieselman; four great- grandchildren: Carly, Eli and Ridgley Hulstein, and Evan Freeland. She was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Derek Byers. Funeral services will be held at Grace Lutheran Church in Westbrook, MN on Thursday, December 9, 2004, at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Roy Williams and the Rev. Bill Klevetter officiating. The organist is Betty Rupp. The pallbearers are Beryl Morton, Jim Dibble, Kenny Anderson, Steve Kjorness, Jim Freeland, and Dale Swan. Interment is in Slayton Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Slayton, MN. Visitation is from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the church and also from 9:00 a.m. until time of service on Thursday morning. Totzke Funeral Home of Slayton is in charge of arrangements.
