FileFormat by Terri--MNArchives Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: Judy Clarke Submitted: December 2004 ========================================================================= 1919 - James Edward Crowley - 2004 Jim Crowley was born on September 18, 1919, in Avoca, Minnesota to James J. and Mary M. Farrell Crowley. He grew up in Avoca and graduated from Fulda High School in 1937. He attended Mankato State College and earned his bachelors degree in June 1941. Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Germany during WW II. He was awarded the Purple Heart. After his discharge in 1946, he returned to Minnesota and earned his LLB Degree from the University of Minnesota Law School. Jim practiced law for a short time before his was appointed to the U.S. Department of Justice as a legal investigator. He and Marie OConnell were married in New York City in 1957. He worked with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington DC and Queens, New York for many years. He retired in 1983, and moved to DeLand, Florida where he did volunteer work teaching Spanish and English. Marie died in 1995. Jim would spend the summers in Slayton and return to Florida in the fall and returned to Slayton full time in 2000. He passed away on December 9, 2004, at the Our House, Hospice house, in Slayton at the age of 85. He loved history, literature and language, was fondly regarded as the family patriarch, and was a truly honorable, charitable and gentle man. Survivors include a brother and two sisters: Norbertine Costa, Twinsberg, OH; Clement Crowley, Omaha, N, and Marjorie Tentinger, rural Avoca, MN; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Marie; and sisters: Rose and Virginia. Funeral services were held at St. Anns Church in Slayton, MN on Saturday, December 11, 2004 at 12:30 p.m. with Fr. Larry Brixius officiating. The organist was Judy Andrews. The song leaders were Tom Paal and Tom Crowley. The pallbearers were Larry Sabinske, Rick Paal, Jason Moen, Terry Tentinger, Adam Tentinger and Tim Crowley. Interment is at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery in Avoca, MN. Military honors accorded by the Avoca Legion post.
