Ray attended grade school in Reading and Worthington. He graduated from Worthington High School in 1965. He later graduated from South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota in 1970. At SDSU, Ray joined the ROTC, and upon graduation he was activated in the United States Army and served his country for three years with overseas duties in Korea. Ray married Jenet Bertelsen on December 1, 1973, in Williston, North Dakota. After being discharged from the Army the following March, Ray and Jenet began farming in the Reading area. Ray drove bus for the Reading Bus Line and most recently drove truck for Larry and Joan Peterson. He was a member of the Reading Boosters Club; and a former member of the Reading Lions Club. Ray enjoyed fishing, playing cards and spending time outdoors. He also enjoyed helping at the Reading Community Center and driving bus for Bud Fritz with his fellow drivers. Ray loved his family, especially watching his children’s sporting events and playing with his grandchildren. Ray was a kind and loving man who accepted people as they were. He was always ready to help anyone in need, friend or stranger. He brought a lot of joy and laughter to his friends and family and will be missed dearly. Ray is survived by his wife Janet Cuperus, Reading; father Burend Cuperus, Reading; four children: Jason Cuperus, Las Vegas, NV; Melissa (Jason) Schutz, Worthington; Mike Cuperus, St. Louis Park; and Teresa Cuperus, Soldiers Grove, WI; two grandchildren Damon and Mason Schutz; two brothers Bill (Sandy) Cuperus, Reading; and Leon (Pam) Cuperus, Miltona; and one sister Ann (Bert) Meine, Willard, OH; one sister-in-law Veronica Cuperus, Reading. He was preceded in death by his mother Nina Cuperus; and his brother Gerrit Cuperus. Funeral services were held on Friday, January 20, 2006, 11:00 a.m. at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Worthington, MN officiated by Rev. Les Winters.
