Filk, 96, was born on October 20, 1909, in Sibley, Iowa, the daughter of Ude and Maria Folkers Habben. She was baptized and confirmed at the Immanuel American Lutheran Church (Pfingsten Church) near Fulda, Minnesota, by Pastor Carl G. Fink. Mary attended school in Reading and graduated from Worthington High School. She then received her teaching degree from the Minnesota Teachers College. Mary began teaching at a country grade school at the age of 16 and then taught in Mankato, Minnesota. She retired from teaching after 48 years and moved to Worthington, Minnesota. Mary was wed to Clarence Filk on July 20, 1941. Mary was a very active and charter member of the American Lutheran Church in Worthington. She supported three students through the seminary to become pastors, Prosperus from Africa, Ray Blank from Iowa, and Tim Eighmy from South Dakota, and several other students with their education. Mary was also active as a Pink Lady, doing volunteer work for the hospital and Red Cross. She enjoyed quilting, traveling and other church activities. Mary also enjoyed eating out and socializing with her friends. She played the organ at her church and then later played at the nursing home. During her lifetime, she assisted her brother, Lammert. Due to failing health, she had made her home most recently at the Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Fulda, Minnesota. Mary died on Wednesday, November 2, 2005, at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Mary is survived by nieces and nephews, Darlene "Habben" Newman, Tommy Newman, Larry Habben, and James (Aletha) Gerdes. She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, two brothers, one step sister, and five step brothers. A memorial service was held on Saturday, November 5, 2005, at 1:30 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, Minnesota, with the Rev.Mike Zaske officiating.
