He attended school in Ruthton, Minnesota, graduating from Ruthton High School in 1955. After high school he entered the Army National Guard. He served in Company M. 135th Infantry Regiment out of Pipestone, Minnesota, and was honorably discharged January 10, 1958. On June 18, 1950, he married Lavonne Williams. Their union was blessed with six children and 36 years of life together. Richard drove truck and worked in construction as a heavy equipment contractor at various locations in Minnesota and Florida. On retiring, he lived in Sioux Falls and other South Dakota towns before moving to Pipestone, Minnesota. He had recently moved to Kenneth, Minnesota. Following a lengthy illness, he died at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Sunday, November 6, 2005 at the age of 68. Richard was a member of the American Legion and the Lions Club, both in Wood Lake, Minnesota. He enjoyed stock car racing, metal working, and reading westerns and military history. Richard is lovingly remembered by his former wife Lavonne Fischer, Cottonwood, Minnesota; six children; Nicky Fischer, Luverne, Minnesota; Dick Fischer and his wife Danita, Bushnell, South Dakota; Dawn Rupp and her husband Jerry, Granite Falls, Minnesota; David Fischer and his wife Dawn, Wood Lake, Minnesota; Taunya Geihl and her husband John, Cottonwood, Minnesota; and Melissa Torgerson and her husband Dan, Hanley Falls, Minnesota; 14 grandchildren; brother Kenneth Fischer and his wife Mary, Marshall, Minnesota; sisters; Janice Brown, Tyler, Minnesota; Delores Larson and her husband Roger, Vadnais Heights, Minnesota; Carol Schober, Newport Beach, California; and Susan Fischer, Tyler; sister-in- law Joanne Fischer, Sleepy Eye, Minnesota; brother-in-law Ron Kuiper, Sioux City, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Lester Fischer; and sister Audrey Kuiper. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 10, 1005, at 2:00 pm at Hartquist Funeral Home, Utoft-Johansen Chapel in Tyler, with burial in Hope Cemetery in Tyler, MN. Visitation is Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Utoft-Johansen Chapel in Tyler, and continues Thursday at the chapel prior to the service.
