She grew up on the family farm northwest of Slayton and attended Slayton High School, graduating in 1957. She completed her education at Mankato Business College in 1958. On September 3, 1960 she and Donald Gass were married at the First Presbyterian Church in Slayton. Following their marriage, they lived in Fulda where they operated Gass Trenching, where Joanne did the bookkeeping all of her married life. Joanne and her granddaughter, Lacey Gilb passed away on November 21, 2004 as a result of a deer-car accident. Joanne was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Fulda where she served on the Funeral Committee. She belonged to the Eastern Star in Worthington and had served as Worthy Matron. She also belonged to the garden club, Iron Horse Motorcycle Club, Gold Wings Road Riders, and the Northwest Iowa Riders. Joanne enjoyed motorcycling and the trips that she and Don have made to Sturgis, SD, Canada, all over the United States and Mexico, gardening, doing counted cross-stitch and crafts, fishing, road trips with her mother, spending time with her grandchildren, and having coffee with her many friends. Survivors include her husband, Don Gass of Fulda; two daughters, one son and their spouses: Kris and Tim Wildfeuer of Fulda, Michele and Randy Gilb of Hastings, MN and Lee and Dawn Gass of Cedar, MN; seven grandchildren: Justin, Ashley, and Sheyenne Wildfeuer, Kelcey Gilb, and Jarred, Austin and Kayley Gass; her mother, Frances Johansen of Slayton; two brothers and their wives: Craig and Linda Johansen, and Kevin and Gail Johansen all of Slayton. She is preceded in death by her father, Roy, and one brother, Douglas Johansen and granddaughter, Lacey Gilb. Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Fulda, MN on Saturday, November 27, 2004 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Michael Foster officiating. The organist is Mary Jean Buschena. The pianist is Norma Meyeraan. Special music is by A.W. Koopman. The pallbearers are Justin Wildfeuer, Aaron Barritt, Brian Gass, Doug Johansen, Chris Johansen, and Matt Johansen. Interment is at Slayton Memorial Gardens, Slayton, MN.
