He was the youngest of four children. Joe was very athletic and participated in baseball, basketball and boxing. He won 26 consecutive boxing matches. He was All-Conference his freshman year in basketball. He demonstrated his sales skills by convincing his dad and mom to allow him to enlist at the age of 17. In 1942, he joined the Navy and served from 1942 to 1945. He served in the Atlantic and was in on the invasion of Normandy Beach on D-Day. His ship was involved in many successful missions. Upon his return, he met the love of his life, Eleene Deutschman. They were married at IHM Church in Currie on October 11, 1947. They were married for 57 years. He coached an IHM junior high basketball team and had many victories. At Avoca, his girl's softball team went undefeated. Joe's faith was always and important part of his life. He was active in his church. He served as a trustee at St. Rose of Lima Parish. He was also a Eucharistic Minister and served on the church council at St. Ann's Church. Joe was a volunteer fireman in Avoca and Currie. He served on the Avoca School Board, and was mayor of Avoca. He was one of the founding member of the American Legion in Currie and a lifetime member. Joe worked as a salesman for the Griggs Cooper Company for over 40 years. He was consistently recognized as one of the top producers winning numerous awards including million-dollar salesman of the year in 1990. These are just a few of the facts of the life of Joseph Bernard Gorman. They cannot portray the impact he had on so many; he was a loving husband, adored father and grandfather and a committed friend. Joe passed away on May 13, 2005, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 81. His quick Irish wit and love of life will remain with us through the many memories he has left us. Joe is survived by his wife Eleene of Avoca, MN; six children and their spouses: Joanne and Michael Sexton, Fairbanks, AK; Charles and Leslie Gorman, Edina, MN; Kevin and Deanna Gorman, Seattle, WA; James and Theresa Gorman, West St. Paul. MN; Timothy and Elizabeth Gorman, South Lyon, MI and Peggy and Doug Gorman-Quam, White Bear Lake, MN;, 17 grandchildren: Matt, Katie and Molly Sexton, Craig, Scott, Megan and Joey Gorman, Natalie, Ali and Jake Gorman, Emily, Erin and Ben Gorman, Brennen, Hannah and Gretchen Gorman, and Dan Quam; three great grandchildren: Taylor, Ryan and Max; sister, Anne Gorman of LeSueur, MN, brother, John Gorman of Bloomington, MN and sister-in-law, Louise Gorman of Currie. and Chase, their dog. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Emmett "Irish". Funeral services will be at St. Ann's Church in Slayton, MN on Saturday, May 21, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. with Fr. Cyril Gorman and Fr. Charles Quinn officiating. The organist is Patty LeClaire. The song leader is Steven Meyer. The bagpiper is John Michael Hughes. The pallbearers are Joe Disch, David Schreier, Jim Rachuy, Alan Wisdorf, Leo Wisdorf, Joe Peschges, Jim Kerr, Brian Gorman, Gary Gorman, and Bob Gorman. Interment is at Calvary Cemetery, Currie, MN. Visitation will be on Friday, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at St. Ann's Church in Slayton with a prayer services at 7:30 p.m. . Visitation will also be one hour prior to the services at the church on Sat.
