As a young boy, he lived in Chandler and Avoca. His father died in 1922, and the family moved to Slayton. Copie attended Slayton Elementary School and graduated from Slayton High School in 1936. He continued his education at the University of Minnesota and then graduated from the Minnesota School of Business in 1940. On April 17, 1940, he and Claudia Fern Deuth were married in Spirit Lake, Iowa. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Slayton and Copie purchased and operated Hagen Market-Grocery & Butcher Shop in Slayton and Avoca. He sold cars for Andy Herdman for a short time. He bought the Club Royal and operated that for several years. He began his insurance career with Old Northwest in 1958. In 1965, Copie bought out Don Weck's insurance and real estate business in Slayton. He sold the insurance part of the business in the mid 1980's and continued selling real estate and also did appraising. He also worked for Finley Engineering for several years. He owned several pieces of property in Slayton and was landlord to many people over the years. After Claudia died, he moved to a remodeled home in Slayton and called it his "Bachelor's Pad". Copie passed away on May 18, 2005, at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 87. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Slayton where he had served on several committees over the years. He also was a founder and charter member of the Slayton Kiwanis Club. He belonged to the Slayton Chamber of Commerce and the Murray County Lodge where he has served as Grand Master and was a recipient of the Hiram Award. He was a member of the Slayton Country Club. Copie enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, playing cards, cooking and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to all. Survivors include his three children: Bruce and Lelia Hagen, Osprey, FL; Paula and Ron Teig Riverside, CA, and Jennifer and Garry Immerman, Roseville, MN; seven grandchildren: Keith and Chris Hagen, Mary Ann McMillen, Jeff Teig and Jason Teig, and Josh and Phil Immerman; great- grandchildren: Brock and Jenna McMillen, Mason Immerman, Gavin and Lauren Teig. He was preceded in death by his parent; wife Claudia; one daughter Patricia Hagen, and two brothers, Paul Hagen and Sidney Erickson. Funeral services were held at Christ Lutheran Church in Slayton, MN on Monday, May 23, 2005, at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Dan DeBlock officiating. The organist was Twlya Hungerford. The soloist was Heidi Winter. The pallbearers were all of his grandchildren.
