FileFormat by Terri--MNArchives Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: Judy Clarke Submitted: October 2006 ========================================================================= Murray County, MN Eleanor Apolonia Henkels, the daughter of Nicholas and Anna Maria Nies Eichers, was born on April 16, 1912 on a farm near Watkins, Minnesota. She grew up on the family farm and attended country school. She and her twin sister cared for their aging father and managed the farm until his death in 1936. Eleanor then moved to the Twin Cities and attended the School of Agriculture and attained her high school diploma in 1940. She graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1944. Eleanor moved to Slayton to teach Home Economics and Physical Education until 1946. Eleanor was united in marriage to Roman Henkels on August 24, 1946 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in St. Paul, MN. After their marriage they lived and farmed north of Fulda, MN. Eleanor resumed her teaching in 1966 in Chandler, MN teaching Home Economics until her retirement in 1973. She remained on the farm after Roman's death in February 1993. Eleanor passed away at her home surrounded by her family on Sunday, September 10, 2006 at the age of 94. She was a member of St. Gabriel's Catholic Church where she was a member of the Ladies Aid. She also belonged to Daughters of the Soil (soil conservation) where she had served as State President of the organization. Eleanor was also active in the Reading Club, Murray County Extension Club, Prairie Music Association and the Murray County Horticulture Society. She enjoyed traveling, fishing, picnicking, playing cards, reading, sewing, quilting, cooking and being a partner in the farm and all of its activities. Eleanor appreciated the performing arts, concerts, plays and attending World Fairs. Survivors include her three daughters and their husbands, Mary and Al Sack of New Richland, MN, Marlys and Tom Rodgers of Fairmont, MN and Mona Henkels of Fulda, MN; four grandchildren, Kelly Henry and her husband, Kevin, David Meyer, Robyn Meyer and Amy Holmgren and her husband, Eric; two step-grandchildren and their spouses, Matt and Allyson Rodgers and Julie and Guy Beemer; two great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild and two sisters-in-law, Bernice Cornett of Maplewood, MN and Helen Mulcahy of North St. Paul, MN. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and eight brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church Fulda, MN at 10:30 AM on Thursday, September 14, 2006 with the Fr. Bob Horihan officiating. The organist was Mary Ann Boom. The pallbearers were Curt Eichers, Bud Eichers, Duane Becker, Dennis Becker, Dave Becker and Del Becker.
