Ellen was born June 21, 1917 in Fulda, Minnesota to Charles and Mary (Cullen) Hendricks. She graduated from St. Gabriel's High School in 1933 and from Mankato State Teachers College in 1935. She taught in several one-room schools, including the Gallagher School from St. Mary Township, which is now on display at Farmamerica. On July 29, 1941 she and Charles Hofmann were married at St. Gabrielms Catholic Church in Fulda. Ellen and Charles resided on their farm in Janesville Township for 63 years, operating their beekeeping business, gardening, and raising four children. Ellen was a woman of faith and a life-long Catholic who served her church in numerous ways including as catechist and lector. She also found another spiritual home at the Holy Spirit Retreat Center in which she was active. She served on the board of directors for the Waseca Area Hospice, was a hospice volunteer, and served on the Waseca County Board of Social Services. Ellen was a knowledgeable, passionate advocate for environmental, political, and social issues. She was an avid reader, and had a delightful sense of humor, a ready smile and a generous spirit. She marveled at the beauty of the world, enjoyed traveling, and especially loved trips to Maui. Family and friends knew Ellen as an excellent baker and cook, and elegant hostess who lovingly prepared countless home-cooked meals for her guests. Ellen was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Alice Herber, Mary Hogan and Agnes Higgins. She is survived by her loving husband Charles, children Laurence (Janet) Hofmann of Minneapolis, Anne Pierce (Gerald Kegler) of Plymouth, MN, Gregory Hofmann of Seattle and Mary Lynn (David) Goode of Maui, HI; grandchildren Lisbeth Peirce (Ketel Paulsen), Andrew Peirce (Tammy Cliche), Lev Hofmann, Katherine Peirce, Aaron Ward, Laura Hofmann, Galen and Rosalie Goode; sister Rita Coale and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. The Hofmann Family will greet friends at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Janesville on November 26 from 9:30 to 11:30 followed by a liturgical celebration of Ellen's life at 11:30. A luncheon will immediately following the liturgy. It was Ellen's wish to will her body to the University on Minnesota Medical Anatomy Bequest Program. It was her hope to ensure the education of future health science professionals.
