FileFormat by Terri--MNArchives Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: Judy Clarke Submitted: June 2005 ========================================================================= Stanley "Shorty" Jans was born on November 19, 1936 to William and Edna (Schuknecht) Jans in Murray County, Minnesota. He attended country school for four years, and then attended elementary and high school in Fulda; graduating in the Class of 1954. After graduation, he farmed his motherís farm. On September 14, 1958, Stan was united in marriage to Verna (Meier) Jans. They farmed for five years and then moved to Robbinsdale, Minnesota. Stan worked for Howard Lumber during the day and attended evening classes at Dunwoody Institute and the University of Minnesota. In 1966, Stan began working at the Department of Transportation in Engineering. He served in various capacities as inspector, survey party chief, office manager, and project supervisor for thirty-six years until his health forced him to retire in 2001. Recently, Stan's cancer had returned. He was taken to the Methodist Hospital in Rochester where he remained until passing away on Monday morning, April 25, 2005, at the age of 68 years. Stan was a longtime and dedicated member of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Windom where he served as a church elder, memorial committee, financial committee. He was also a member of the Minnesota Government Engineers Council and Lions Club. He was also the current mayor of Bingham Lake. Stan could build or fix anything. He liked woodworking, especially making birdhouses and benches. He had a lifelong love of sports and particularly enjoyed watching his grandchildren Stan is survived by his wife of forty-six years, Verna Jans of Bingham Lake; two sons, Keith (Shelley) Jans of Burnsville; Kurt (Deb) Jans of Sherburn; four grandchildren, Ashley, Zachary, Taylor, and Mitchell Jans. Four brothers, Alvin Jans of Atwater; Harvey (Shirley) Jans of Avoca; John (Joyce) Jans of Dundee; Duane (Marilyn) Jans of Fulda; and sister- in-law, Jordis Jans of Westbrook. Stan is preceded in death by his parent, William and Edna Jans; one brother, Kenneth Jans; and one sister-in-law, Arleen Jans. Funeral services were held on Friday, April 29, 2005, at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Windom with Pastor Paul Sajban officiating. The organist was Ruth Wohlfeil. The vocalist was Kay Gunderman. Playing the trumpet was Page Kern. Casketbearers were his Godchildren:Julie Negan, Greg Jans, Dennis Jans, Bob Meier, Amy Gilbertson, Kelly Jans, Loren Amundson, Brian Dierks and Jeff Meier.
