FileFormat by Terri--MNArchives Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: Judy Clarke Submitted: November 2004 ========================================================================= 1912 - Marie Elizabeth Johnson - 2004 Marie Johnson was born on December 5, 1912, in Slayton Township, Murray County, Minnesota to Louie and Lula Powell Quaintance. She grew up on the family farm near Slayton and attended country school and then Slayton High School. On August 27, 1931, she and Herbert F. Johnson were married at the Lutheran parsonage in Slayton. Following their marriage, they lived on the family farm until the summer of 1961 when they built a new home across the road from the farmstead. He later farmed with his son-in-law, Delbert Zinnel. Herb died on September 3, 1994. Marie continued living on the farm for a short time and then moved to Slayton. Marie has been a resident of the Lindenwood Apartments in Slayton since August 2001. She passed away at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on November 24, 2004, at the age of 91. She was a member of the Hadley Lutheran Church where she was active in WELCA and had served as president several times. She taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and participated in quilting. She was a life long member of the Farm Bureau and belonged to Brookside Circle for over 60 years. Marie enjoyed quilting, embroidering, refinishing furniture and woodwork, gardening and flowers were her special love. She was an avid sports enthusiast and followed her grandchildrens sports. She was a fan of the Twins, Vikings, Gophers and Timberwolves. Survivors include her daughter Marilyn Zinnel, Slayton; six grandchildren and their spouses: Debbie and David Biren, Rochester, MN; Michael Zinnel, Avoca, MN; Melanie Zinnel, Shakopee, MN; Mark Zinnel, Pipestone, MN; Doreen and Bob Veenhuis, Bellevue, NE; and Marcia and Mike Geraets, Monticello, MN; extended family: David Onken, Hadley, MN; Cathy Vande Braak, St. James, MN; and Deb Elliott, Shakopee, MN; nine great-grandchildren: Sean and Matt Biren; Nate (Jenni), Brianne and Taylor Zinnel; Dani and Josh Onken and Jamie and Jordan Geraets; sisters: Viola Koob, Brainerd, MN; Mildred Knudson, Albert Lea, MN; and Lois Oldewurtel, Slayton. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Herb; son-in-law Delbert Zinnel and three brothers: Ken, Don and Charles Quaintance, Funeral services were held at Hadley Lutheran Church in Hadley, MN on Saturday, November 27, 2004 at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev, Bob Moritz officiating. The organist was Dianne Johnson. Special music was by Heidi Winter and Mike Zinnel. The pallbearers were Michael Zinnel, Mark Zinnel, David Biren, Bob Veenhuis, Michael Geraets, and David Onken. Interment is at the Highland Home Cemetery in Hadley, MN.
