Harriet was born in Little Rock, Iowa on May 31, 1912 to Harm and Hattie Duis Hinders. She graduated from Sibley High School, Sibley, Iowa in 1931 and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught all 8 grades in one-room country schools in Osceola County, Iowa until her marriage to Carl August Kleve on May 28, 1938. At that time a school teacher in Iowa could not be married, so she was a homemaker until 1941 when they moved to a farm near Avoca, Minnesota. Shortly after moving she began teaching, again in a one-room schoolhouse, until 1951 when they adopted 3 brothers: Darrell, Marvin, and Karel. They adopted a daughter, Janice, in 1957. She went back to teaching first grade in Storden, Minnesota from 1965 to 1971. In her retirement she taught Sunday School, raised Pomeranian dogs, sold Avon, and gave many speeches to various groups about what it was like to teach in a one-room schoolhouse. She was a great storyteller. Teaching was her first love; she often said if she hadn't met Carl, she never would have married, but continued to teach school all her life. They lived on the same farm for 56 years until her husband's death on July 25, 1997. She came to Cave Junction, Oregon to live with her son and daughter-in-law, Marvin and Gail Kleve, in November of 1997, and became a resident of Spring Pointe Specialty Care Community on October 1, 2001. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Darrell and Cindy of Wheatland, MO, Marvin and Gail of Cave Junction, OR, Karel and Shirley of Hutchinson, MN and daughter Janice Kleve of Clear Lake, IA; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was proceeded in death by her parents, brothers Harvey, Merrill, and Fred, sister Catherine Ransom, and Carl, her husband of 59 years. Cremation services will be provided by Hull and Hull Funeral Directors. Private services will by held at Spring Pointe on Wednesday, Oct 27; Memorial service will be held in Fulda, Minnesota at a later time. She will be laid to rest in Prairie Hill Cemetery in Fulda, Minnesota beside her beloved Carl.
