Kolander were attended by one of the largest groups that ever attended services in the Fulda Lutheran church. The services were held last Thursday afternoon and microphones carried the services to the Lutheran church where an over flow crowd had assembled to hear the services and pay a last tribute of love and affection to their well loved friend. Beautiful floral tributes and gifts to missions and philanthropic projects of the Lutheran church were given in her memory, since thru out her lifetime her deepest interests were in the welfare of her church and its many activities. The music for the services were furnished by the choir of the Fulda church and a male quartet from the Lakefield community composed of Messrs. Handricks, Wacker and Leising, teachers in the Lutheran parochial school at Lakefield, and Rev. Fred Kolander of the Delafield church sang "Oh How Blest Are Ye Whose Toils are Ended." The Fulda choir sang "Abide with Me," "Asleep in Jesus" and "There Is an Hour of Peaceful Rest." At the home the quartet sang "For Me to Live Is Jesus." The hymn at church was "Jesus Thy Blook and Righteousness." In their sermons both Rev. K.S. Ansorge of the Iona church and Rev. O.A. Soeldner of the Fulda church paid tribute to the beautiful Christian character of the deceased and her willingness to be helpful in all the work of the church. They spoke words of comfort to the bereaved family, never doubting in ultimate reunion in the land where death never comes. Rev. Ansorge spoke from Rev. 14, 13, and Rev. Soeldner from Isaiah 55, 8. The pallbearers were Ernest Oldewurtle, Earl Peters, Harry Peters, Fred Koopman, Edison Onken and Martin Miller, Jr., of the Iona Lutheran church which Mr. and Mrs. Kolander attended since leaving Fulda. Interment was in Prairie Hill cemetery. Out of town relatives here for the funeral were Mrs. Kolander s mother, Mrs. Anna Helmkamp, and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Vetter of Berwyn, Illinois; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Helmkamp and K.J. Helmkamp of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. O.G. Tiemann and Mrs. Selma Lange of Norborne, Mo; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Helmkamp of Oberlin, Kansas; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Breidert, Wm. Helmkamp, and Mrs. Wm. Rohrbeck of Glidden, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Heuton, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Aron and Miss Bertha Helmkamp of Lidderdale, Iowa; Rev. and Mrs. W. Preus of Jasper; Rev. E.H. Widman and Miss Anna Steege of Ogden, Iowa; Rev. and Mrs. Fred Kolander, Mr. and Mrs. Theo Wacker, Mr. and Mrs. ? sing and Mr. and Mrs. W. Handrich of Lakefield, and a host of relatives and friends from Windom, Lakefield, Tracy, Slayton, Iona, Westbrook, Jackson, Worthington and other communities. About three weeks ago Mrs. Kolander was taken to Rochester and there underwent a successful major operation. She seemed well on the way to recovery and news from her bedside was always most cheerful, making news of her death on Monday, April 22, the more shocking. Lydia Helmkamp was born near Chicago on October 19, 1891. She was married to G.J. Kolander at Addison, Illinois, on July 12, 1913. At that time Mr. Kolander was teaching in the Fulda Lutheran school and she came as a bride to Fulda which was the family home for over a score of years. Their two sons, Luther and Jerome, were both born in Fulda, and were educated in the Fulda schools. The family moved to Slayton in 1934." (This article came from a relative s scrapbook.
