Lanners was born July 17, 1906 on a farm near West Bend, IA to Mathias and Frances Hippert Weinzetl. She grew up on the family farms near West Bend, Willmar and St. Killian. On June 25, 1925 she and Nicholas Lanners were married at St. Columba Church. Following their marriage they farmed in Nobles County until 1945 and then moved to a farm west of Iona. Nick passed away on April 4, 1961. Mary continued living on the farm until 1962 when she moved to Slayton. In 1986 she moved to the Southgate Apartments. Due to failing health, Mary entered the Slayton Manor Care Center in 1999 and passed away there on October 15, 2004 at the age of 98. She was a member of St. Ann's Church in Slayton and formerly St. Columba Church in Iona. She was an honorary member of the WCCW. Mary also belonged to the VFW Auxiliary in Iona. She enjoyed bingo, playing cards, gardening, fishing, knitting, crocheting, and spending time with her family. Mary also wintered in Arizona for several years. Survivors include three children and their spouses; Nick and Carolyn Lanners of Payson, AZ; Richard and Patricia Lanners of Iona and Joyce Schoo of Wanda, MN; 19 grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren three great great grandchildren and one sister, Adeline Stitz of Madison, SD, one son-in-law, Mick McCormick of Iona, MN. She is preceded in death by her husband, daughter, Bernice McCormick, granddaughter, Renee Schoo, son-in-law, Philip Schoo, sisters, Cecilia Weinzetl, Lena Wichtl, Frances Koob and Susan Lanners, and brothers, Joe, Matt, Mike and Vic Weinzetl. Funeral services St. Ann's Church Slayton, MN on Monday October 18, 2004 at 10:30 AM with Fr. Mark McNea officiating. The organist was Jean Tentinger. The song leader was Rick Goedtke The pallbearers were Dean Lanners, Greg Lanners, Guy Schoo, Jay Schoo, Hal Schoo, Lee Schoo, and Denny McCormick. Interment at St. Columba Cemetery in Iona, MN.
