Gloria Anderson officiating. 1913 - Alvin Lester Larson - 2004 Alvin Larson was born on October 14, 1913, on a farm in Bondin Township, Murray County, Minnesota to Carl and Clara Holmberg Larson. He grew up on the family farm attended Country School District 113, Avoca High School, and one year at University Farm School. In June 1941, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He received the Purple Heart medal and several letters of accommodation. Following his discharge in 1945, he returned to farm in Murray County. On January 17, 1948, he and Joyce Olson were married at Slayton, Minnesota. Following their marriage, they farmed north of Slayton and raised their children. Alvin semi-retired from farming in 1988 and continued to help his son until 1999. He and Joyce continued to live on the farm. Due to failing health, Alvin entered the Slayton Manor Care Center. In October of 2004 he became a resident of the Our House Hospice House in Slayton and passed away there on November 11, 2004 at the age of 91. He was a member of Lime Lake Lutheran Church from birth until 1962 where he had served as secretary of the church council and then became a member of Christ Lutheran Church where he had served as a board member and chairman of the church council. He was the treasurer of the Mason Township Board for 20 years, served on the Lake Beauty Country School Board for three years, and was a life member of the Farm Bureau, serving as chairman for two years. Alvin was active in 4-H, serving as leader for 34 years, on the Executive Board for 12 years, and 4-H Auction Board for 28 years. He was a lifetime member of the Slayton VFW that he had helped organize in 1946. Alvin enjoyed playing cards, especially 500, playing baseball in his younger years with the Dovray and 4-H baseball teams, deer hunting, family fishing, softball, visiting relatives and neighbors and going to his childrens and grandchildrens school and sporting activities. Survivors include: his wife Joyce Larson, Slayton; four sons, four daughters and their spouses: Thomas and Denice Larson, Circle Pines, MN; Stanley and Jean Larson, Balaton; Jerry Larson, Panora, IA; Harvey and Carolyn Larson, Slayton, MN; Brenda and Allen Hurlbut, Worthington; Mary and Monty Schreier, Savage, MN; Kathy and Paul McDonald, Randolph, MN; JoAnn and Jerry Lewis, West Point, NE; 24 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister Elsie Sonstegard, Spicer, MN and two brothers and their wives: Maynard and Vi Larson, Fulda and Jack and Luella Larson, Miltona; and two sisters-in-law: Eva Larson, Fulda and Elna Larson, Slayton. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant grandson; sisters: Irene Miller and Marion Larson, and brothers: Kenneth, Walt, and Paul Larson. Funeral services were held at Christ Lutheran Church in Slayton, MN on Sunday, November 14, 2004, at 3:00 p.m. with the Rev. Gloria Anderson officiating. The organist was Twyla Hungerford. Special music is by A.R. Sellevold and Jean Larson. The pallbearers were grandsons: Aaron Larson, Bruce Larson, Joshua Larson, Joseph Larson, Dustin Hurlbut, Matthew Schreier, Bryan Larson, Greg Larson, Jarrod Larson, Brian Adams, and Josh Hunt. Honorary pallbearers were Rueben Boxrud, Case Vos, John Giese, Harold Schafer, David Schwartz, and Warren Hanson. Interment is at Slayton Memorial Gardens.
