FileFormat by Terri--MNArchives Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: Judy Clarke Submitted: November 2005 ========================================================================= Charles Henry Nelson was born on March 16, 1924 on a farm in Ellsborough Township Murray County, Minnesota to John and Vendla Vieman Nelson. He grew up on the family farm southwest of Balaton and attended country school district # 79. In 1944 he was drafted to the U. S. Army and served in the European Theatre during WW II. After his discharge in 1946 Charles returned to the family farm. On October 30, 1951, he and Margaret Ford were married at Parkers Prairie, Minnesota. Following their marriage they continued farming the Nelson farm until 1971. Charles then went to work in the construction business operating heavy equipment. He worked in several places in southwest Minnesota. He and Margaret divorced in 1992. Charles moved to Slayton and lived at the Southgate Apartments. He was a resident of the Pipestone Good Samaritan Home in Pipestone, Minnesota for two weeks. Charles was a patient at the Pipestone Medical Center for the past six days before passing away there on November 1, 2005 at the age of 81. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Slayton and previously was a member of Sillerud Lutheran Church where he served on the church council and sang in the choir for several years. He also served on the Ellsborough Township Board for 10 years. Charles enjoyed playing the electric organ, music and dancing. Survivors include three daughters and their husbands: Janet and Ron Miller, Bowling Green KY; Karen Halbersma, Pipestone, MN; and Annette and Paul Welchert of St. Cloud, MN; seven grandchildren; Brett Miller, Becky Kahle, Bethel Moore; Aaron and Anna Kay Halbersma; and David, Gabriel and Joseph Welchert; three great-grandchildren, Jackson and Thomas Kahle, and Leah Moore; four sisters: Helen Bailey, Oaklyn, NJ; Edna Kasemodle, Canby, MN; Anna Marie Mortland, Marshall, MN; and Alice and her husband, Don Olsen, North Platt, NE; one brother Warren Nelson and his wife Patricia, and a special friend, Luella Smith, Slayton. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Selma Nelson and Hilda Nelson and three brothers: Morris, Herb and Rueben Nelson. Memorial services were held at Christ Lutheran Church in Slayton, MN on Saturday, November 5, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Dan DeBlock officiating. The organist was Twyla Hungerford. Interment is at Sillerud Cemetery rural Balaton, MN.
